    2. William Hurst
    3. John, there is a Hurst cemetery at the end of Blackberry Lane which starts at the end of Old Hurst Road. I don't remember any Carnahan tombstones there, but it was very overgrown when I was there a few summers ago. How is the Old Home Place you mentioned related to the John Carnahan house pictured on the Digital Library of Virginia site? That's under the Archives/Manuscripts section with the Carnahan Family Bible. There are a couple of Calfee cemeteries in Wythe County, which have not been transcribed except in a loose-leaf book at the Wytheville Community College Kegley Library. I believe that he was buried at or near the Carnahan "Old Home Place" - a house still standing at the north end of what I believe is 656 (Hurst Road) where that road dead-ends into New River/Claytor Lake. I also believe that at about the time Claytor Dam was completed and flooding of the bottomlands began (1939), a number of graves were moved, one of which may have been John's. I was told that there are graves "on top of the hill" to the west of the Old Home Place, but I have not visited that site. Does anyone have any clues as to these graves, if in fact they are there? I'm also looking for the grave of Juliette Sophia Calfee Carnahan, who died on March 1, 1909. She was John Newton Carnahan's widow. I haven't located it among any of the "Calfee" graveyards. 3. In this cemetery there is an Ada McGlothlin Wheeling, does anyone know anything more about her. I am interested in an J. A. L. Wheeling who married ? and who had a daughter Ada Ann Wheeling that married William J. Akers. Wm. J. and Ada Ann Wheeling were the parents of my Aunt Madeline Akers who married Ellis Nunn, my mom's brother. I know is probably not Mrs Akers, why have her maiden name on stone, but maybe they are related. Wm. and Ada had 11 children including Madelene. Madelene just passed away in 2000. Wm. born in about 1871 and Ada Ann Wheeling born in abt 1874, which is a ten year difference from the lady in this cemetery. I am not sure if their, Wm and Ada Ann's dates are estimates or not, they were given to me by someone on the VAFloyd list, I think. They lived in Floyd Co., but Madelene and Ellis lived most of lives in Pulaski. Any info will be helpful, also any sources. 1. Iris Immigrant database searchable
    2. Debra
    3. I received this information this morning on another list. This database is very interesting, so thought I would pass it www.npr.com All Things Considered, March 17, 2005 For 90 years, a Catholic newspaper in Boston ran a "missing friends" column with advertisements that helped newly arrived Irish immigrants find lost friends and relatives. On this St. Patrick's Day, Boston College is unveiling a searchable online database of more than 30,000 records of those ads. Michele Norris discusses the database -- which includes columns from The Boston Pilot that ran from 1831 to 1921 -- with Boston College Irish studies professor Ruth-Ann Harris. Harris' research reveals that 65 percent of the ads were of siblings looking for each other, and that men were reported missing more often than women. Many ads were placed by wives searching for their husbands who were off building the nation's canals. The database has helped researchers learn more about migration patterns of immigrants, Harris says. The Pilot claimed a 75 percent success rate of finding missing persons through the ads, but Harris says she's been unable to prove that figure. "I've been amazed at what people have told me about finding relatives... So many Irish people don't know where [their families] came from in Ireland. So you can do a search and see where there are frequencies of that name and then you can go to other sources from there." http://infowanted.bc.edu/ Debra Sunderman Researching family names Owens, Gilbert, Sutphin, Young, Crosier, Sowder, Gross and more __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
