BRUNER John Amos BRUNER, 77, died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. L. BYRD, near Dora furnace, following an illness of several months from heart trouble. Funeral services will be held this afternoon 3:00 o'clock from the home, followed by burial in the Dora cemetery. Mr. BRUNER was a native of Hawkins county, Tenn., but had been a cotton mill worker at Fries for a number of years coming to Pulaski, to make his home with his daughter two years ago. He had been a member of the Methodist church for 30 years. he had been twice married, both wives being dead. Surviving are his children: Mrs. Nannie AUSTIN, Narrows; Mrs J. L. New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BARBER, Louis E., 58, longtime sheriff of Montgomery County, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Virginia Beach Memorial Hospital in Virginia Beach, Va. Born November 12, 1942, Sheriff Barber was a Christiansburg resident for much of his life. A veteran of the Christiansburg Police Department prior to being named Sheriff of Montgomery County in 1977. He continued in office until 1991, winning re-election four times while earning an appointment to the Virginia State Crime Commission. At the time of his death, he was employed by Virginia Beach Sheriff's Department. In addition to his career in law enforcement, Sheriff Barber was a life member of the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, remaining active for over 25 years. He was also a member of the McDaniel Masonic Lodge #86. He was married to the former Emme Morrison, and is also survived by a son and a daughter, Ronald P. (Ron) Barber of Arlington, Va., and Elaine Barber Epperly of Christiansburg; his mother, Lucile Barber of Christiansburg; grandson, John Epperly of Christiansburg; and brothers, Robert M. (Tommy) and his wife, Shelia Barber of Salem and D. Michael (Mike) and his wife, Erlene Barber of Christiansburg; and four nieces, Lori Nolen, Brandi Barber, Lisa Draper, Aimee Barber. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. (Tom) Barber. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 1, 2001 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg. Funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- NEWMAN, Canary Huff, 90, of Draper, died Tuesday morning, March 27, 2001 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Carroll County on October 22, 1910 and was the daughter of the late Wyatt Blaine Huff and Myrtle Smith Huff. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Marshall Newman; a sister, Elva Huff Hurst; and two brothers, Carson T. Huff and Cannie Lee Huff. She was a member of the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Radford University and William & Mary. She had a long career in education as a teacher and guidance counselor. Surviving are sister and brother-in-law, Dovie Huff and Shirley E. Cox of Hiwassee; sister-in-law, Tida M. Huff of Sylvatus; brother-in-law, A. Vernon Hurst of Draper; many special nieces, nephews, great-nephews, great-nieces, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church with the Dr. Cortez Cooper and the Rev. Preston O. Sartelle, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Newport and was preceded in death by her husbands, William F. Shrader and L.W. Bill Stanke. Surviving are three sons, Eugene Franklin Shrader of Pembroke, James Richard Shrader of Norristown, Pa. and Darrell Wayne Shrader of Christiansburg; four daughters, Geraldine Vanhoozier of Christiansburg, Bonnie Beasley of Newport, Carolyn Williams of Newport, and Beverly Williams of Pembroke; one sister, Lula B. Fleeman of Narrows; fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Stanley Blankenship of Narrows. Funeral services will be conducted 11a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2001 in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke with Pastor Roger Henderson officiating.
