Mr. Miller, who has been a mail carrier on route No. 1 out of Dublin for 15 years, had been in ill health for the past four years. Mr. Miller was a member of the Episcopal church and the Dublin lodge of Masons. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth KING MILLER, and one daughter, Mildred, of the home; seven sisters, Miss Daisy MILLER, of the Pulaski hospital staff, and Mrs. James BROWN, also of Pulaski; Miss Sally MILLER, Miss Margaret MILLER, Miss Nellie MILLER, and Mrs. David HARMAN, all of Dublin; Mrs. William HOPPER, of Leeksville, N. C.; and one brother, W. K. MILLER, jr., of Dublin. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 4 p. m. at the Dublin Presbyterian church with Rev. C. W. Sydnor, of Pulaski in charge. Special Masonic services will be conducted at the grave.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Curtis Albert and a brother-in-law, Allen David Vest, II. Mr. Albert was an Army veteran of WWII, retired from the U. S . Postal Service, worked at the Cyphers Furniture Co. and was a bus driver for the Giles County School System. He had been a member of the Radford First Pentecostal Holiness Church for 75 years and provided active leadership over the years in various capacities including Bible studies leader, Deacon, board member, building committee member and Trustee. He was also a former active member of the Gideons. He retired from Lynchburg Foundry in 1977 as Maintenance Superintendent after 49 years of service. He served the Radford community in numerous capacities including 32 years on the Radford City School Board. The McHarg, Belle Heth, and Radford High Schools were built during his tenure. He also served on the founding board for the Vocational Technical School and supported its transition to New River Community College. Other community service included over 30 years of service in support of the Military Affiliate Radio System where he was an intermediary in the relay of Armed Forces personnel messages to their families. He was awarded a certificate by former United States President, Richard M. Nixon, for contributions to the Selective Service System. He also served on the First and Merchants Bank Advisory Board and as a member of the local Industrial Development Authority. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Louise M. Baker of Radford; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Robert Baker and Patsy Baker of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Geneva and Kenneth Harris, and Juanita and Marvin Sutphin, all of Radford; two sisters and brother-in-law, Ava and Harvey Linkous of Radford, and Esther Hopkins of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Rachel and Lucille Baker of Roanoke; eight grandchildren, Judy Lynn Harris, Rev. Ricky T. Dickens and Kirk Lee Sutphin, all of Radford, Patricia Harris McEachern of Prairie Grove, Ark., Blaine William Sutphin of Franklin, Va., Scot Eden Sutphin of Norwood, N.C., Jason Lee Baker and Brandon Keith Baker, both of Raleigh, N.C.; and ten great-grandchildren. Nancy was the daughter of the late Ernest and Frances Chapman. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Virginia Tech in the 1970s, and has considered Blacksburg her home since then, having worked at the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, and for the last 16 years in the Department of Forestry, College of Natural Resources, Virginia Tech. Nancy is survived by three brothers, Michael Chapman, Silver Spring, Md., Patrick Chapman, Olympia Washington, John Chapman, Richmond, Ky.; and two sisters, Barbara Conroy, Simsbury, Conn., and Anne Litton, Berea, Ky. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins; and her two loving cats, Ike and Hallah, as well as many friends, who were her lifeline through her illness. Besides her parents, Nancy was also predeceased by her cherished companion and best friend, Grady Pennington. A graveside service will be held at North Fork Baptist Church Cemetery, in Ellett on Saturday, April 7, 2001 at 11 a.m., followed by a celebration of Nancy's life at the Alumni Hall Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center, Va. W. MORTON, for 16 years commonwealth's attorney for Pulaski county and nestor of the local bar, died Friday night at 8:30 o'clock in Richmond hospital, where he had been treated for two months. No immediate relatives being in the city, the tidings came to friends through a message to the Southwest Times. Though to be expected, the news of Mr. MORTON'S passing came as a distinct shock to his many friends of the city and county who knew he was ill but who had not been advised that he was extremis. The body will reach Pulaski this morning on the No. 41. Funeral services will be held at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon from the Presbyterian church with the Rev. Robert King the pastor in charge. Burial will be with Masonic honors, a special communication of the lodge being called at 4 o'clock to attend. Francis William MORTON was the son of Capt. John Blair and Annie Rice BOWMAN MORTON and was born December 13, 1863 at High Hill, Cumberland county, the home place overlooking the Appomattox river, where his earlier years were spent. His mother and family came to Pulaski county in 1868, following the death of Captain MORTON, and in 1872 Mrs. MORTON married Judge Isaac HUDSON of Dublin, judge of Pulaski county court under old county court regime. Mr. MORTON was prepared for college in a school conducted by Professor George Walker. He entered Hampton-Sidney College from which he graduated in the class of 1886. Following his graduation, he taught for several years in a boys' school at Lexington, and later accepted a chair in South West University, Clarkesville, Tennessee.

New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BARBER, Louis E., 58, longtime sheriff of Montgomery County, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Virginia Beach Memorial Hospital in Virginia Beach, Va. Born November 12, 1942, Sheriff Barber was a Christiansburg resident for much of his life. A veteran of the Christiansburg Police Department prior to being named Sheriff of Montgomery County in 1977, he continued in office until 1991, winning re-election four times while earning an appointment to the Virginia State Crime Commission. At the time of his death, he was employed by Virginia Beach Sheriff's Department. In addition to his career in law enforcement, Sheriff Barber was a life member of the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, remaining active for over 25 years. He was also a member of the McDaniel Masonic Lodge #86. He was married to the former Emma Morrison, and is also survived by a son and a daughter, Ronald P. (Ron) Barber of Arlington, Va., and Elaine Barber Epperly of Christiansburg; his mother, Lucille Barber of Christiansburg; grandson, John Epperly of Christiansburg; and brothers, Robert M. (Tommy) and his wife, Shelia Barber of Salem and D. Michael (Mike) and his wife, Erlene Barber of Christiansburg; and four nieces, Lori Nolen, Brandi Barber, Lisa Draper, Aimee Barber. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. (Tom) Barber; and a son-in-law, Hank Epperly. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 1, 2001 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg. In accordance with his wishes, a private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 176, Christiansburg, Va. 24073. She was the daughter of the late Emmett Arthur and Callie Stigger DeHart. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melon Morrison; and a son, Eugene. Survivors include a grandson, Ronald "Pluke" Brown of Radford; and several nieces and nephews, including Betty DeHart of Radford, Barbara Latten of Radford, Nancy DeHart of Richmond and James DeHart of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; special friends, Mary Jo Spiers and Mrs. Helen Darden, both of Radford. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 2, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Rev. Henry Lindsey and Rev. John Price officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery on Rock Road. RHOADES, widow of the late Rev. J. W. RHOADES, a member of the Holston Conference of the Methodist church, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. F. PRATER, in Marion on Monday. Death followed a lingering illness. The deceased has been in declining health for several months and during the past few weeks her condition had been critical. Although her death was not unexpected, her demise came as a shock to her many friends. She was born in Pulaski county March 10, 1850. She was before her marriage Miss Lucinda MARTIN. She was married to J. RHOADES also of Pulaski on December 7, 1870. To this union were born six children, two boys and four girls. One son and one daughter preceded her to ________ Surviving are one son and three daughters as follows: W. M. RHOADES, of Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. E. M. PIPPIN, of Knoxville, Tenn.; Mrs. J. C. DISHMAN, Bristol, and Mrs. R. F. PRATER, Marion also two sisters, Mrs. A. J. CARTER, and Mrs. Mary ROTENBERRY, of Radford. She is survived by 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Funeral services will held Tuesday afternoon from the PRATER home and were conducted by Rev. Mr. Johnson, of the Marion Methodist church, assisted by the Rev. G. L. Shupe, of Telford, Tenn. Burial was in the family plot.

M.; Mrs. John E. WHEELING, Martinsville, Va.; Mrs. Frank L. HAWKINS, San Jose, Calif.; four brothers Randall W. WHITE, Princeton, W. Va.; John Frederick WHITE, Keystone, W. Va.; Ernest F. The body remained at Stevens until 1 p. m. Monday.

BISHOP Word has been received here of the death of Henry W. BISHOP, aged 73 years, which occurred Tuesday evening about 7:30 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Margaret WHITE, at Radford. His wife, who was Miss. Mary REED, preceded him to the grave about eight years ago. Mr. BISHOP was a resident of this place for about fifty years, having sold his farm about seven years ago, and since made his home in Montgomery county. The following children survive: Mrs. Margaret WHITE, Radford; Mrs. Henry BISHOP, Montgomery county; Mrs. R. L. COVEY, Mrs. N. M. ALBRIGHT, Mrs. E. M. DODSON, and James BISHOP all of Indianola, Iowa; John BISHOP, Snowville, and Mrs. Viola THOMPSON. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock and burial was in the Radford cemetery. In spite of his illness, death came as a shock to his many friends and relatives.
