    3. New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CONRAD, James Edward, 89, passed away Monday, May 7, 2001 at his home in Radford. He was a member of the Radford Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), having joined at about ten years of age. He served the church as Sunday School Superintendent from 1934-40, as an Elder and Church Treasurer for over 40 years, and as a member of the choir for over 60 years. He was a member for over 50 years, and served as Past Master of VA May Masonic Lodge #38 A.F.&A.M. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for over 37 years. Jim graduated from Radford High School in 1930 and worked in Blue Front Grocery; he worked from 1931-33 in Jamison Grocery which later became Krogers; in 1934, he worked for Ead's Piggly Wiggly and in 1935 for John Nye Piggly Wiggly; in 1940, he began working for the U.S. Postal Service in the old building and then moved to the new building in 1941 where he continued to work for over 36 years. Survivors include his wife, Selma Godbey Conrad of Radford, whom he married on November 20, 1941; one son and daughter-in-law, Glen Edward and Mary Ann Conrad of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 10, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Radford Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery in Radford. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Radford Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She was born in Beckley, W.Va., on September 12, 1928 to the late Jabez and Lula Fowler Montgomery. She was a graduate of the Concord College (class of 1948), Athens, W.Va., she continued her education at Marshall University and Harvard University extension. She was a longtime resident of Charleston, W.Va., where she taught for many years. A resident of Blacksburg since 1994, she was active in the American Association of University Women. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles L. Forbes in 1985. Mrs. Marsh was a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, Edwin C. Marsh, Sr. of Blacksburg; her daughter and son-in-law, Martha Forbes Marsh an Edwin C. "Chip" Marsh, Jr. of Leveland, Texas; a niece, Rebecca Kenfield of Florida; a nephew, Wayne Morrison of West Virginia. Mrs. Marsh's requested that no funeral services be held. I have a John White who was born in Tenn. (Washington Cty.) who had at least 3 sons- Robert Earl, Johnny Ray and Robert Larry. I believe John was born abt. 1916/1917 and may have had a brother Ben. John either lived in Pulaski Cty. or visited relatives there at one time. He may have also been married to Fronia McNew at one time. She encourage hundreds of young people to love the written word, to appreciate poetry and literature, and to have fun in life. Always quick to laugh, "Liz" was a fun-loving friend and popular teacher. She continued teaching high school English and special education in Lake City, Fla. and Holly Hill, Fla. She retired in 1979, having taught in public schools for forty-three years. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Emmett Roy "Chic" Sizemore in 1971, her granddaughter, Jacqueline Darcy Sizemore, her grandson, Michael Louis Sizemore, brothers, Louie and Joe Barta, sisters, Julia Barta Trapaso, Ethel Barta Paskovics, and Mary Barta Bagley. Mrs. Sizemore remarried in 1979 to the late Mr. Charles Wesley Dean, who passed away in 1988. Mrs. Brown was born in Richmond the daughter of William H. and Dorothy F. Cardwell. She was educated at the Collegiate School, Hollins College and graduated from Westhampton College at the University of Richmond. She had also done graduate work at Virginia Tech. Mrs. Brown taught biology and physical education in high schools located in Richmond and in Marion. She also taught biology at Marion Junior College. In Blacksburg, she taught the sixth grade at the Gilbert Linkous Elementary School for twelve years. An avid athlete in her youth, Mrs. Brown coached womens high school basketball and, at the junior college level, womens field hockey. She was an active member of Blacksburg Presbyterian Church where she served as Deacon and was one of the first women to serve as an Elder. She was a member of various committees of the Montgomery Presbytery and the Synod of Virginia. She was also an active member of the P.E.O.. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her sisters, Virginia Cardwell Eldridge of Acton, Mass. and Dorothy Cardwell Besenfelder of Richmond. Survivors include her husband, T. Cartmel Brown of Blacksburg; two sons, Thomas C. Brown, Jr. of Alexandria and William C. Brown of Hopkinton, N.H.; and four grandchildren. After retirement, she worked with her husband on the family farm. Actually, Mary never retired from nursing as she continued to administer family and friends. Daniel (Dan) Shelburne, Jr., all of Radford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Claude and Helen Sawyers of Christiansburg, James and Joyce Sawyers of Pound, Va.; two sisters and their husbands, Stella and Lester Nelson of Canton, Ohio and Edith and Joseph DeMarco of Baltimore, Md.; and a large extended family. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2001, at the Grove United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at DeVilbiss Funeral Home.
