He was a member of the Mt. View United Methodist Church and was a retired employee of AT&T. Mr. Allen was a veteran having served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. Details connected with the tragic accident are lacking, and it is understood that Appalachian officials are investigating the matter today as to any relations which their lines might have had in connection with the killing, being, it is understood, nearby the telephone lines where the accident took place. The storm may have been responsible in the blowing down of some wires.

New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ALEXANDER, Effie May Phillips, formerly of 3551 Riner Road (Route 8) Christiansburg, Virginia went to be with her Lord on Friday, May 18, 2001, at Pulaski Healthcare Center after a short illness. Born in Floyd County, Virginia (The Indian Valley Community) on September 9, 1908, she was the daughter of Mary Alberta Dickerson and Walter Earl Blaine Phillips. Mrs. Alexander's family moved to Pulaski County (The Snowville Community) in 1918. Mrs. Alexander and her husband, Howard, ran H.I. Alexanders Store on Route 8 near Riner from the mid-40's until 1969 at which time they moved two houses closer to Riner. From 1969 to 1998, travelers enjoyed her well kept lawn and flowers. In 1998, her health required her to move to the Pulaski Retirement Community. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Ingram Alexander; daughter, Theo Alexander Owens; son-in-law, Lonnie Calvin Owens; three sisters, Alma (Jackie) Davidson, Cora Brunella and Kate (Billie) Phillips; two brothers, Ed Phillips and Landon (Phil) Phillips; plus three nephews. She is survived by two sisters, Edith P. Elkins of Pulaski and Ann P. O'Dell of Draper; two brothers, Basil Phillips of Glenn Burnie, Md. and C.B. In 1970, Leo Beuhrman, a film Dr. Hawes narrated, was nominated for the prestigious Oscar of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, and that same year was nominated by the Information Film Producers of America for the best short documentary. Dr. Hawes was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, National Honorary Society, Delta Epsilon, Social Fraternity, American Theater Association, Kansas University 50-year club, and the VPI University Club. In 1976, Dr. Hawes founded the First Nighters Club. He served from 1975 to 1994 as Chariman of The Department of Theater of Radford University and directed over 50 theatrical productions. He was an active member of the Delmar Reformed Church and volunteered with the local fire department. He retired from the N.Y. Telephone Co. after 32 years. He moved to Floyd County in 1989. His life was one of service to people and community. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Rosa Lee Lavender Yeomans; his parents, Harold and Emily Yeomans; and one brother, Kennard Yeomans. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Randy and MariEllen Yeomans of Indian Valley; two daughters, Donna McMillen and Jeri Dewey, all of Indian Valley; six grandchildren, Doug, Kim, Meghan, Zachary, Amity, and Kali; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Clara Fuller of Caroga Lake, N.Y.; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jean Mossall. I am especially interested in knowing date of his death and where he is buried.Also I would like to know who his parents were. He was a severly crippled shoemaker and went by the nickname of "Caney". They were the parents of my grandmother Effie M.
