This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. He is my paternal ggg grandfather (actually, my paternal gg grandmother's father). I don't suppose you have any information on a title of "major" or "colonel" that was frequently appended to his name? Your information is quite thorough, and evidently well researched, as evidenced by the document records you cite. Many of them I am not familiar with. A couple of entries may contain erroneous information, at least according to my family's version of descendancy. Also, I may be able to provide a name and dates for an "Unknown" you list. According to my records, the "Unknown" female in generation 2 is Elizabeth Agnes Clarke. It was she who married Rev. John Ellis Edwards, my gg grandfather. I don't have an exact birthdate. My references quote 3 different dates: 1809, 1812, and 1814 for her. A third party cites 1809; the Edwards family bible cites 1812, with a correction appended stating 1814 is right. I believe 1812 to be correct, only because it is a more frequently used date in our family. She died in 1898, and I am told is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, next to her husband. Your information about her brothers is very informative, as I have copies of a letter written in 1854 by her husband to 2 of her sons, referencing a visit to "Uncle Howson's" and a message for "Uncle Samuel." Until your message, I hadn't known whether these were Clarkes or Edwardses. In your notes regarding the marriage of "Unknown" (Elizabeth Agnes Clarke) to Rev. John Ellis Edwards, my information has their marriage as May 11, 1838. Your information about their children is incorrect. They had 3 sons: Leroy Summerfield Edwards, 1839-1901; Rev. William Emory Edwards, 1842-1903; and Dr. Landon Brame Edwards, M.D., 1845-1910 (my g grandfather). The entry for Ida Edwards is misplaced. She is the daughter of Rev. William Emory, one of 8 children from his 2 marriages. Ida and an unidentified brother were the progeny from a union with the daughter (unidentified) of a Rev. William Carter, MD (Methodist preacher and doctor) of North Carolina. After his first wife's death, William married Harriet Annie Watts of Norfolk, and they had 6 children: 3 unidentified, and 3 as follows: Rev. William Emory, Jr., 1876-1913; John Ellis, Jr., 1880-1906; and Annie Lou (no dates available). At some point, Ida M. Edwards was living in Dunn, NC, presumably as an adult. Going back to Rev. John Ellis Edwards who married Elizabeth Agnes Clarke....... under your caption "Generation 2," you state that JEE was born abt. 1840. This is obviously incorrect. As is the data about his parents. John Ellis Edwards was born August 1, 1814 in Guilford County, NC. He was the son of Thomas Edwards (1/28/1781 - 9/22/1863) and Susannah Ellis (8/5/1787 - 5/4/1848). They were married January 16, 1806. That union produced 6 other children, in addition to JEE. Rev. John Ellis Edwards was a widely known and highly respected minister in the Methodist church, initially in the North Carolina Conference, but chiefly in the Virginia Conference, thanks I suppose to his wife's roots in Virginia. His son, Rev. William Emory, and grandson, Rev. William Emory, Jr. were both highly respected in the Virginia conference as well. There once was a saying that you couldn't spit in this family without hitting a preacher.
