Hi all, Here is the reply I just got from the person in charge of the Digital Library Program at the Library of Virginia. I am passing it on to my 4 Virginia county lists and also to VAGEN-L. I have asked her permission to forward this message to you, which she granted. -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 22 Oct 2002 12:52:01 -0400 From: Elizabeth Roderick <ERoderick@lva.lib.va.us> To: 'Mary D. One of my subscribers just informed us about the closing of the Digital Library Program, but then wrote back to say that the collections will remain online for the time being. Does the library accept contributions from the public? If so, I imagine that there are a LOT of persons who have personally benefited from the DLP who would be willing to donate funds to the library. The public could probably never make up for the loss of funding from the Commonwealth of Virginia. But allowing the public to contribute financially to a program that they see as very worthwhile might make them feel that they have personally done something to help the situation. Yes, contacting local government officials will also help, but I bet that people would be willing to donate directly to the library as well -- if such contributions are allowed. -- Mary Taffet Rootsweb list admin for Prince Edward, Buckingham and Appomattox Counties Descendant of lots of old Virginia families mdtaffet@syr.edu
