Jack, I have absolutely no connection to this family at all, but since you'll probably keep sending this query a couple of times each month until you get a response from somebody, which hasn't happened so far, I decided to do a little search. Your Thomas Rains does indeed appear to have moved to Ross County, Ohio; the family shows up there in the 1850 census for Springfield Township. Based on this information, they appear to have left Virginia between 1820 and 1823. I looked in the VA marriage records and don't see a Thomas Rains that married someone named Mary, but I do see a Thomas Raines: Marriage Index: KY, NC, TN, VA, WV, 1728-1850 Raines, Thomas Spouse : Brown, Mary Marriage date : Feb 13, 1817 This marriage took place in Frederick County, VA. I do see an 1820 census entry for a Thomas Rains in Frederick County, VA, but I don't see any census listings at all for a Thomas Rains in Prince Edward County, VA. In fact, the only census listings for any RAINS at all for Prince Edward County are for Anthony RAINS in 1830 and John RAINS in 1840. Do you know for a fact that there is even a connection to Prince Edward County at all for your Rains family?
