One of my 5gr-grandmothers is Mary Ann Muckle of N.Carolina---I've no idea if she was born there, but most of the people in the area could be traced to VA. She married John Belk about 1740, probably in NC. I've heard from a number of researchers of this family, and some of them have indicated that they believe her surname to have been Muckleroy or McElroy. We do know these names are allied by marriage to the Belk families, but have not been able to place them the same as Muckle. Thanks for your response. I really don't know if I can consider the names to be the same family---but it is an interesting possibility.
