I will ask my grandma if she remembers you. I have lots of questions for you. I will try not to ask any of living people. 1. Did you ever meet Powhatan and Dora Thompson? Which would be Minnie's parents. 2. Do have or know of any pictures of them? 3. Did you ever hear of any of Powhatan's siblings? 4. Do you have access to the Farmville Herald newpaper records? 5. And the biggest question of all do you know who Powhatan's parents were? Or of anybody still living there that might know. Im so excited to hear back from you. My grandma is so interested to learn about Powhatan, and if he was Indian. She is 93 so I'm trying to work fast. This has brought her and I so close. Thank you for any help. SWEM Library This document is a key that Alexander Brown made to some sources that he was using in the late 19th century. The current location of many of these sources is unknown. Some of the records were public, some may have been documents that he owned or to which he had access at that time. The Alexander Brown document has value because it may provide a researcher with a clue to use in his genealogy research but the researcher will need to do his own investigation into extant records. Since the primary mission of Swem Library is to serve students, faculty, and the academic community, Swem Library does not have staff to conduct genealogical research. If a researcher would like to come to Swem Library and examine the Alexander Brown Papers they will be made available or if the researcher wishes to hire someone to examine the papers, Swem Library will provide the name of a professional genealogist. ________________________________________ A Partial List of Those Who Settled: 1. in Old Albemarle prior to 1761 2. in Old Amherst prior to 1776..with 3. some of those who served in the French and Indian War from Albemarle and Bedford 4 and an incomplete list of those who served in the Revolutionary War from Old Amherst 5. together with a list of Autographs written prior to 1800 The Lists are taken from: 1. According to the Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, he was born in Prince Edward County, VA in 1763, (but I have also seen the date of 1779), and died in Person County, NC, in 1840. He was in the War of 1812. He married Margaret Stephens (Stevens) and they had the following children: Thomas, Matthew, Ruffin, Major, and Howell Stephens. Capt. Howell Stephens Nelson (Civil War) married Ann Judson Overbey (Overby). Among their children was son, Matthew Overbey Nelson, of Acree's Tobacco Warehouse, Danville, VA. Any information on the earlier lineage of Matthew Nelson is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I had seen both names Jane Elam and America Seay and wondered what/why, etc. I did not know of the connection. One of Cordelia's daughters was named America, so I think Miss Seay must have been her mother. And I have recorded Cordelia's middle name as Seay, as well. James was 90 when he wrote his will?!? Wow! Are you saying that James died shortly before 20 June 1864 and that was the date of his probate? I will try to find the will online. At least now I know the county to search. You've helped me a great deal. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it. Do you have any data on George Washington Adams and his family? His son Sydney is a real mystery to us. He adopted my grandfather after his marriage to Mary Wilson Addison. However, family lore is that Sydney was grandfather's natural father. I question this. I think my grandfather was the product of an union of Mary Addison's husband and a young girl listed in the 1900 census living with them. The girl had a child, James Kelly Mulkey and my grandfather's name was James kelly Adams. They are shown with the same birthdate. I therefore think it unlikely Sydney was James Kelly's natural father. If you know anything about this you will have my undying gratitude. WHO James Kelly was has yet to be answered.
