Edwina, My Francis Rice was in Prince Edward County at the time it was created out of Amelia County in 1754. I have added a full-name index for the names in the article. There are 2,377 words. I am sending this file to you. Please let me know how much to send you, as it is over the 1,000 words for familes in P.E. County before a certain date. Regarding "undocumented" genealogies. Many of these are correct, despite people not including "documentation". Heck, most of us know our families back several generations. However, what I am going to submit on the Rice family I have thoroughly documented, and we even have DNA proof to boot! If anyone here hasn't considered using DNA, I highly recommend it! The people at www.FamilyTreeDNA.com are great folks! Regarding the Rice's, about the only curiousity I have yet to resolve is how Col. Samuel Cobbs is related (if he is related at all) to Francis Rice. He deeded land in P.E. County in January, 1754 (at the time in Amelia County. I need a copy of this deed, if anyone can locate for me!). Then in his Amelia County will in 1757, Col. Cobbs gives Francis Rice and wife a lifetime heir in his 190 acre plantation in Prince Edward County! I am wondering, then, if perhaps this was Francis Rice, born abt 1735 - died 1806, SON of Francis and Sarah (Womack) Rice, i.e. "Francis Jr." who married 2nd, Mrs. Eleanor (McGehee) Smith, widow of Lt. Jonathan Smith, in February 1790. I am wondering if perhaps his unknown first wife, by whom he had all of his children, may have been a daughter of Col. Cobbs. We do know Samuel Cobbs patented land along Swift Creek in Henrico County in the 1740's adjoining some of the same people whom Francis Rice Sr. (c.1711 - c.1771) adjoined between 1731 and 1739. Will [email protected] wrote: May I say that I am also looking forward to getting my copy of the Prince Edward County Book. I know I will learn much from it. A similar book was done by Cumberland County some years ago and I have found it invaluable. No, they are genealogies in the strictest sense. Rather they are a collection of various families stories. Don't you wish someone had done the same thing 25 years ago or 50 years ago? Think how generations to come will enjoy reading about their families. Yes, there may be mistakes but there are mistakes in "documented" genealogies. I would advise anyone interested (and if they have the funds to do so) to buy the book, read it, enjoy it, and then using the material as clues, do their own research and documentation. I agree the response was out of line and insulting, I don't blame you for being angry, but please reconsider quitting. You'd be letting this person set your agenda. I doubt many here agree with the tone; they could have disagreed with you in a far more civil [and mature] manner. I have found a lot of valuable genealogical and historical information in these books published by other counties. Also, if you find a family of interest, you can contact the submitter, because they are still alive (most of the time). I have both contacted people and been contacted by people even a decade after the book was printed. I encourage everyone to participate and document their family. I had no idea this was in process. Can you tell us how to purchase the book or give us a website or send us something offline if it's against rootsweb rules. The only way these kinds of books are successful is to publicize their existance to the folks who are interested, and there's a big group here. Roberta Estes

May I say that I am also looking forward to getting my copy of the Prince Edward County Book. Dear Margaret Stockton, I have a ancestor who owned a large 100 acre parcel of land in Prince Edward Co., Virginia in about 1805. My question to you is, are there going to be old land records in the book? Where do I send info to be included in the book? Thank You, Donna Fischer PS ( I also have Stockton's in my family back in the 1600's born in NY) --- Margaret Stockton <[email protected]> wrote: > > Right now the only thing I can tell you, we are > hoping for the fall > of 2008. I would like to share my own experience regarding the New P.E. Historical Society's Book to be printed. I have submitted several articles on the Crute family and it includes verified dates from 18 years research including visiting many Southside Virginia Court Houses and other research materials available including valid census information from Ancestry.com. I am looking forward to having the book and reading about other possible related families to my own. I count every new piece of information provided as an opportunity to do more research and validate what I can. Many folks have put great effort in gathering this info and I for one am grateful. I thought that the Prince Edward County deadline was last spring, revised to summer (2007) and was to be out before Christmas 2007. If this is a different project than that one, I would like to submit to this one, too. Details, please. Carolynn Knauff Waldon **************Start the year off right. I have a researcher in Pr Ed who contacted in person someone from the His Soc.And when others submit their info they do not include documented evidence other then word of mouth or their interpretation. My researcher then went thru the index and looked up info for me. Sorry but it is not something that will be of much help before say the 1850's. But maybe some other family will benefit from it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edwina Covington" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, January 14, 2008 10:37 AM Subject: Re: [VAPRINCE] P.
