    3. No, Francis Rice's wife was Sarah Womack, daughter of Thomas Womack and Mary (Farley) Womack. Cobbs was born 1698 and married about 1717 to Edith Marot, who was still living at the time of his will in 1757. Now, Francis and Sarah Womack Rice had a son, Francis, born about 1735 or 36, and we do not know who his first wife was, but she was the mother of his children. This is the Francis who married, 2nd, Mrs. Eleanor (McGehee) Smith, widow of Lt. Jonathan Smith, in P.E. County February 3, 1790, by whom he had no children. Francis died in 1806, and names his mother Sarah's part of the William Womack estate, which he received, and which he willed to his son, Isham Rice. I suppose it is possible that Francis (Jr.) may have married 1st, a daughter of Samuel and Edith Cobbs, but I have no proof of this. Only a possibility. Then again, Cobbs's children would have been the same age as Francis Sr. and his wife, Sarah Womack. so I doubt there's a connection of that sort. I just find it hard to believe that Cobbs would grant a lifetime heir to Francis without there having been some sort of family tie. We don't know much about Francis Sr. prior to his showing up in Henrico County September 17, 1731 when he patented 276 acres on Swift Creek, in Dale Parish area. We are almost positive he was off the Francis Rice who shows up in 1639/40 as a tobacco grower for Warwick County, VA. We can place this older Francis Rice within 30 miles of Dale Parish in 1676 when he and Capt. John Langhorne were at the "fort at Appomattox" which is Fort Henry, on the falls of Appomattox River (now Petersburg). It was established about 1645. But it could also mean the wife of Samuel may have remarried to Francis Rice Sr .A life estate usually means the wife's dowery that she brings to the marriage. If Samuel left this then it may be his wife who owned it .So do you know who Samuels wife was and if she remarried after Samuel died? Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: "W. D. 3. Unfortunately, I don't have any photos to go with the article, unless I can scrounge up some pics of the Pucketts. I do have one old pic of the Rev. William Rice of Wayne County, KY who was a son of Abraham Rice of Prince Edward County. I suppose I could include that! Oldest pic I have. I'll see what I can do today about dividing this up into smaller sections, lol! Thanks, Will Edwina Covington <[email protected]> wrote: Willie, It is 10 cents for every word over the thousand. 1. [VAPRINCE] Col. Samuel Cobbs - died 1757
    2. W. D. Smith
    3. Do you have any information on the family of Colonel Samuel Cobbs of Amelia County that might help explain why he would have given a lifetime heir to Francis Rice at his 190 acre plantation in Prince Edward County? I assume this was located near Buffalo Road Presbyterian Church, where Francis Rice served as Sexton. I sure hope someone has a transcript of that cemetery. I'm curious to see how many of our Rices are there.. Thanks, Will *************************************************************** "You should always do your duty in all things. You can do no more. 3. My Abraham Mcgehee sold his land in Prince Edward in the area of Rice/Farmville in 1819 to Richard Armes. Then Richard died and left a widow with kids. Plus the Hines are intermarried with Mcgehee's also. They went to KY. I believe John Armes was the father of Richard.
