Virginia research, and especially the Tidewater area are diffult to research for me. The genetic pattern for McClurgs is this pattern of Nathaniel McClurg who married Polly Redd. They had one daughter. The surname changes and unless the Redds have some early info on Nathaniel, then this info is lost and the line ended. The other obstackle concerning Virginia Reasearh for McClurgs is the formation of the Borden Tract of Rockbridge, Co VA. The McCLUNGs were recruited to settle here and they were very prolific people. One McCLUNG said that he could ring a bell on a post in his front yard and have over 200 of his descendants assemble within 30 minutes. Rev, William McClung visiting the area prior to his completion of The McClung Genealogy, 1909, asked a man who lived down a certain road. He said, you will come to Mr. McClung's house first, then nex, another Mr. McClungs house, and next, Mr. McClung, and next Mr. McClung................................ There is a McClurg - McClung research problem in that transcribers pick up McClurgs as McClungs. This is due to the "N" looking "R" when written. Authors of early Virginia genealogical books usualy state that they cannot be sure that McClurg isn't listed as a McClung. In 1600 in Ireland, Mr. McClung grew tired of being confused with his neighbor Mr. McClurg. He decided that he would drop the "G" from his name and that would clear up the problem. He told all his descendants to do the same. But years later he saw the mistake that he had made and put the "G" back on his name and told his descendants to do the same. In the meantime, some of his descendants had already arrived in America using McCLUN. Today, in the census reports of original pen and ink, the surname McCLUR and the surname McCLUN. Regardless of how this is spelled, both surnames are McClungs from the line of this Irish McCLUNG. The only other McClurg family of record that I can find as a possible family of Nathaniel is on the tax list of prince Edward Co listing "Widow McClurg" I have found no other record on her. Whoever she may be. If I were to speculate, Nathaniel McClurg could have come from SC to VA and married Polly Red and then went to Georgia. Another theory xould be a relationship with the family of Dr. James McClurg of Richmond, VA. His daughter married John Wickham, a constitutional laywer who defended Aaron Burr. See Google, Valentine Museum. It is said that he was one of the most wealthiest men in America who owned plantations from Richmond into far reaching areas of South Carolina. And estate that took years to probate after his death. Since Dr. James McClurg had but one son who died young from a carriage fall, and if there were other unknown McClurg relations living in VA to go down south to assist with some of this estate, it may account for the McClurgs being in SC. I have usually found that many immigrants who came to Charleston came from Barbados, or from down that way. The final total of these unknown McClurgs is now three. Nathaniel McClurg who settled at Crouse, NC Nathaniel McClurg who md Polly Redd James McClurg of South Carolina. I will in time get to Greene County Georgia to see if Nathaniel McClurg's grave can be located if marked. Perhaps whoever else is buried there will give some clues Maybe luck will come my way. I have never had much luck in connecting up the McClurg family. This posting however points out another possible connection . . . . James McClurg who moved to Abbeville approx. 1807-08 from VA, probably Nottoway Co. He was married to Margaret Morgan, daughter of Samuel Morgan, and the entire family is described in a court document (1829) in Abbeville. James McClurg and Margaret Morgan had children: 1. Mary (survived a husband, died intestate w/o issue) 2. William ( I believe he is the William in 1860 Carroll Co. MS, born 1798 VA--apparent son next door named Morgan--in fact, his name may have been Samuel Morgan McClurg--there is a Samuel in 1850 Carroll who looks like the same man) 3. Elizabeth 4. James 5. Samuel, died young, w/o issue--these first five born in VA. 6. Harriet, born in Abbeville Feb 1808, married Joseph Buse in Abbeville or Greenville SC--moved to Walton Co. GA by 1830. The name Buse is often spelled Buise--see a young Buise male in William McClurg's 1860 household in Carroll Co. MS, perhaps a son of Joseph Buse and Harriet McClurg. 7. Sarah/Sallie born 1811 in Abbeville. Found in Nottoway, VA tax list, 1791--just one male over 16 in household, no slaves. Apparently still in Nottoway (living with his father-in-law, Samuel Morgan)in 1806, but in 1810 appears in the census, Abbeville SC, married with four young males, three females (Later law suit against his wife in Abbeville names only three sons, Samuel, William and James.). The reason for the interest is as follows: Samuel Morgan of Morgansville, Nottoway Co., VA (1770-1834) and his wife Lucy Wills (1767-1844) had a daughter, Amy Ann Morgan (1792-1875), who was the second wife of Meriwether Hurt (1782-1828); his first wife was MaryAnn Redd (1787 - Bef 1809), d/o John "Jack" Redd and Mary Truman, and niece of Frances Redd (m. James Cunningham) and Mary "Polly" Redd (m. Nathaniel McClurg). John "Jack" Redd was the son of Thomas Redd and his 1st wife; Frances & Mary "Polly" Redd are the daughters of of Thomas Redd and his 3rd wife, Frances Anderson. The children of Thomas Redd's 2nd & 3rd wives relocated while the children of the 1st marriage stayed in VA. I wonder if Nathaniel & James were brothers? Any additional information about the McClurg's would be greatly appreciated. And as always I remain willing to exchange information on the Redd family and their many connections . . . . The 1850 Census lists Thomas Cunningham as a merchant with realty worth $5,000. Not only did he successfully continue the buisness established by his father, but followed him in civil and political interests as well, for he served three terms as justice of the inferior court of Greene Co. Also, I believe that John Porterfield's parents were Robert Porterfield (1752-1843), the rev war general, and Rebecca Farrar (1764-1798). James Porterfield is very elusive. If any of you have an elderly relative who has memories of life during the Great Depression, preferably in Virginia, who would be willing to contact me I'd greatly appreciate it. I am working on a book on an aspect of Virginia history, so with their permission, some of their stories might be included in the book, but in doing research it has dawned on me that while people are gathering memories of the WW II generation and soldiers, there doesn't seem to be such an effort with stories from the Great Depression. So I'd still like to collect those stories anyway, and eventually place them someplace where they can be preserved. many thanks, Nancy ------- I was never lost, but I was bewildered once for three days. --Daniel Boone
I know of several ladies that are sisters, that are in their 90's in Farmville / Rice area, all but one is in a nursing, the one that is not is very alert and active, she would be a cousin on my husband on the Walton side, she and maybe one of her sisters would likely be good contacts for this, she shared stories with me when I discovered her when we were in that area doing research, I would not want to give her name without her permission, but I would suggest that you check out the nursing homes of the area if you are really interested in this, there are many people there who would love to visit with you, and to write down their memories would be a great thing to do. rwalton ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sunshine49" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, July 19, 2008 11:36 AM Subject: [VAPRINCE] the Great Depression > If any of you have an elderly relative who has memories of life > during the Great Depression, preferably in Virginia, who would be > willing to contact me I'd greatly appreciate it. Wondering if anyone has any info on James M. McCormick who died 1759 in Fauquier Co., Va. Some claim him to be the James McCormick born 1721 as son of Hugh McCormick of Ireland and Cumberland Co., Pa. It is also claimed that James married Susanna Duff about 1740 and that the widow Susanna later married Benjamin Jennings (1779) and Daniel Marr (1786). It seems questionable that James md. Susanna Duff because the Fauquier Co. 1779 marriage record shows Benjamin Jennings married to Susanna Duff (not McCormick). Supposedly, James had a son named John who was born 1745 in Prince William Co., married Elizabeth Morgan and died 1817 in Fauquier Co. I do find James McCormick as a witness in a court case involving Benjamin Morgan 1753 in Prince William Co. Many have tried to find the James McCormick of Cumberland Co., Pa. who supposedly migrated to the Valley of Virginia. The James McCormick of Prince William/Fauquier Co. sure seems like a good possibility. Any thoughts or information about this situation would be welcomed. I am trying to determine if my William McCormick (born c1755 in Va. (?), migrated to Pa. in 1780's, on to central Ky. about 1790 where he was killed by Indians shortly thereafter) could have been part of James' family. William supposedly was married to Maria Cary Eggleston. Art Miller, Louisville
