I am very interrested in your Moore in Charlotte Co. The reason is that I have a Paschal Tucker who married in Charlotte in to Mary Penticost. His brother Epps also married in Charlotte and died there. His dau Sarah Janes Tucker married an Edward Elam and went to TN. I have more on them. But Paschal had moved in 1806 to Green Co KY. He died there in 1821. By 1830 there is a young woman named Mary Polly Moore living on his land. She is 20-30 on 1830 census in Green Co Ky. We have no idea who she is and how she got this land since it was left to Paschals wife who was b abt 1776. Paschal and his brother Epps were orphans both born in early 1770's VA and living in Charlotte Co and we cannot find their father. They are connected to Sullivant/Sullivan and Penticost family several times by marriage in Charlotte Co and also the Sherill and Spillman families. Epps dau Sarah Johns by his first wife Elizabeth Johns was cut off from him in his will because she married Elam. Any ideas on this ? Samuel A. Moore is born in 1818 in Charlotte Co., Va. The 1820 census there, assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that his father was still there in 1820 shows one candidate, an Archer Moore, with 2 male children under 10, 1 over 10 and one female child as well. However, Archer is an old man and is over 45 himself, so this could be a situation where a grandfather is raising kids. The other Moore men there have no small children. Samuel would later be found in Prince Edward County, so I looked here in 1820 as well and only one man has a male of that age in the house, William J. Moore. In 1830 I find two males in Charlotte that are candidates: Archibald (probably the same person as Archer in 1830) who is now age 40-50 and Stephen In Prince Edward, only William J has a boy the right age. In 1840, Samuel could be on his own at age 22, but he is not listed in the census individually. There are no Moore males in either Prince Edward or Charlotte with 22 year old males. In 1850 we find Samuel living in Farmville in a boarding house beside William P. Elam wife Mary. Samuel is a clerk. He married Mary Elam in 1852 and in 1860 we find them Prince Edward County, in 1870 in Charlotte again and by 1880 they have moved back to Buffalo in Prince Edward County. I believe that we have the line of John Brown and Elizabeth Brown (they were cousins), all the way back to the Francis Brown in the 1630s in eastern VA, but I know much less about the Powell family in Prince Edward Co., VA (PECo). There was also a man named Josiah Davidson out of Buckingham Co., VA who married Susannah Hughes of PECo. One or more of their descendants had the given first or middle name of "Powell," so I can't help but wonder if the Hughes family also married into the Powell family in that county. I do know that a Henry Brown and a John Brown (shown as possible brothers on some "charts") each married a Gaines woman, and they lived in Charlotte Co., VA for a while. As I recall, one of these couples moved to GA and the other one moved to the Bedford/Campbell Co., VA area. I have never been able to "connect" these two Brown men to the Brown family that I mentioned in my other post (out of Culpeper Co., VA....and Essex Co., VA before that), but there is at least some chance that they were related (since there were some OTHER Gaines/Brown marriages that involved the Browns who were in Culpeper Co., VA, as I recall). I don't know if the above-mentioned Henry Brown and John Brown in Charlotte Co., VA could have been from the same overall family as your James Brown and Charles Brown. If you go to the Charlotte Co., VA message board on RootsWeb, you should be able to find a couple of posts about this Henry and John Brown (including at least one left by me). Also, there are a few charts on RootsWeb World Connect that include one or both of these men. As I recall, at least one of these men (and MAYBE both of them, depending on what you want to believe) is shown as the son of a William Brown. It appeared to me, however, that more research was needed on all of this. In any case, I wonder if the much later James Brown in Prince Edward Co., VA who married my Davidson relative in the 1920s or 1930s was a descendant of the same overall Brown family as your James Brown in that county? If you know of any living male Browns from your family, at least one of them should certainly be encouraged to join the Brown DNA test. This could very well prove to which overall Brown family you belong. http://brownsociety.org/browndna/dna-brown.htm Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
