    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: chancery157 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.princeedward/1385/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Library of Virginia (LVA) is pleased to announce the completion of two more digital scanning projects. The processing, indexing, and digital reformatting of the Prince Edward County and Portsmouth City chancery causes is now complete. The images have been added to the existing index on the recently redesigned Chancery Records Index (CRI) on Virginia Memory. The Prince Edward County chancery images date between 1856 and 1913 (additional pre-1856 are currently being processed and will be added at a later date). The Portsmouth materials cover the years 1859 through 1932. These localities join twenty-eight counties and cities whose chancery causes have been digitally reformatted and made available through the Library's innovative Circuit Court Records Preservation Program, which seeks to preserve the historic records of Virginia's Circuit Courts. The indexes and images can be found at the following link. http://www.virginiamemory.com/collections/chancery/ To date, The Library of Virginia has posted over 4.8 million digital chancery images from forty-four localities. Please see the Chancery Records Index for a listing of the available locality chancery collections. Seventeen localities are presently being scanned and will be posted in the coming months. However, due to the recent reductions to the Library of Virginia's budget, the pace of the agency's digital chancery projects will necessarily proceed more slowly. Please know these projects remain a very high priority for the agency and it is hoped that the initiative can be resumed in full when the economy and the agency's budget situation improve. Chancery causes are cases that are decided on the basis of equity and fairness as opposed to the strictly formulated rules of common law cases. Chancery cases are especially useful when researching local history, genealogical information, and land or estate divisions. They are a valuable source of local, state, social, and legal history and serve as a primary source for understanding a locality's history. Chancery causes often contain correspondence; property lists, including slaves; lists of heirs; and vital statistics, along with many other records. Some of the more common types of chancery causes involve divisions of the estate of a person who died intestate (without a will); divorces; settlements of dissolved business partnerships; and resolutions of land disputes. If you have any comments, questions, or corrections regarding the CRI or scanned images, please contact [email protected] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In my Baker history we have only first names of our ancestor's slaves from the 1700s in Amelia/Prince Edward County, VA. But did their descendants ever use or keep the name of Baker? Who knows! At the end of the Civil War, some slaves took the name of their last slave-holder and some didn't. In new records now found at the Library of Virginia, the following records are slaves with the last name of Baker in Prince Edward County, Va. This is taken from the Register of Colored Persons of Prince Edward County, Va cohabitating together as Husband and Wife on 27th Feb 1866. This would be right after the Civil War ended. 3. After 50 years of research I think I have an answer. My ancestor Abraham McGehee lived in Farmville area until 1819. He then remained in same area but moved right over the line in Nottoway Co only a couple miles away.He was born 1774 and had enlisted in 1813 as an Ensign in the war . After his son died in 1830 he moved to TN where he ran a ferry. He died there in late 1840. On the spring census for 1840 he is listed . Under the odd questions asked it says have you ever sailed on Rivers and a second one have you ever sailed on Oceans. He checked Oceans. In the new Smithsonian magazine is a photo of Farmville and a little of its history. It said Farmville was founded 1795 as a PORT on the Appamatox River. If this is true then there is the answer I have waited so long for. He sailed from this port to where? What kind of Port was it? What ships and where did they sail too. His brother Charles is also said to have been a sailor. Said to have died in France. So did ships go from Farmville out to the ocean and then overseas? Who can help me with this? Are there any records left of the shipping from Farmville? Pat
