Sort of depends on where you live though--lots of FHCs in the west where I live--even in small towns. In the south it may be easier to get the film from the library of Virginia. I recently viewed all the tax records for Prince Edward, Amelia and Nottoway--found both McClorgs only in Nottoway. James first appeared 1791 and was listed for several years before he moved in with his father-in-law, Samuel Morgan (uncle of the one who had Redd connections). Nathaniel appears only once, 1798--paid taxes on himself and a horse. I think Nathaniel was James' younger brother--and both came to VA from Scotland after the Revolution. Guesswork, but some evidence... Biographies of the MS McClurgs descended from James say he was born in Scotland. They also claim relationship to Dr. James McClurg of Virginia and McClurgs of PA. It may be that both James and Nathaniel were grandsons of James McClurg/Barbara Vance of Wigtown Scotland--as was Dr. James of Virginia--by a son (James? Thomas?) who apparently remained in Scotland. We only know of two sons of James NcClurg who came to America--Walter,father of Dr. James, and his youngest brother, John, who settled in PA several decades before the Revolution. Bill McClurg has worked out much of this McClurg lineage and agrees that James and Nathaniel, despite lack of evidence, were probably part of it. 2. ALways remember that spelling of names, even now, undergo changes. Census takers, court people etc, spelled names the way they sounded. There were many COCHERHAM settlers in Amelia, Prince Edward, Pittslyvania (down into North Carolina) and throughout our country and you will find the name spelled many ways.. 1. [VAPRINCE] SMITH
    2. Carolyn Bruce
    3. Can someone who is knowledgeable on things Franklin County, Virginia, and/or Prince Edward County, Virginia, see if you can find out the previous location of John SMITH who married in Franklin County, Rosanner BALF or BOLFE (m.b. 01 January 1807). John may have been born in one of Franklin's parent counties, or, as David SMITH suspects, John and/or his parents may have come from Prince Edward County, Virginia. David has found that several given names... Creed, Byrd, John, Robert and Nancy... appear in the family of Martin SMITH and Margarite PRICE in Prince Edward, AND in our boy John's Franklin County family, too. Any help would be appreciated and a long-term mystery will perhaps have been solved. Carolyn HALE BRUCE Virginia Beach, VA

Joseph had three wives: Martha Gibbs, Martha P Holt, and Laura A (Lester) Fowlkes. He died on 21 Jan 1910. I have seen him in many trees with "C" as his middle initial, and with many birth dates. I am trying to determine correct information for both. I have some court documents from Pr Edward County, none of which have his middle initial. I have a copy of his son's (Joseph Robert Leneave) marriage license that has the parents' names as "Joseph R Leneave" and "Martha Holt". This is the only place I see the older Joseph's middle initial. Any help? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
