My name is Laurence Ligon. My family is also from Prince Edward county Virginia. I recently went to Richmond and found a book called the Ligons and their descendents. It was written in the 1920's or 30s and lists all the family connections/marriages/deaths etc. That might be a great place for you to find out more information. The book does not have much in the way of black folks. My family is also black, but I found some great information on the family including the fact that my great grandfather - Young Ligon was part of a wagon train that went to Texas in the early 1850s. 2. Dear Ligons, Please contact me directly @ [email protected] I have some suggestions that might help you find some Ligon ancestors. If I'm reading some genealogies correctly we may be distant cousins...my possible Ligons, were only Ligons for one generation c. 16xx. I am descended from Capt. Thos. Harris from both son, William, and dtr. , Mary who married a Ligon. Lately, i've been researching wills and other court records, which often list slaves. Didn't realize that P. E. Co. Served as "incubator". That w/certainly help account f/LG. %age of black:white pop. in antebellum censuses. I'm afraid that some of my families may be responsible as I am white. I think you can link places/plantations etc to find family. Not sure how we acquire our last name. Meaning was it because the slaves were on the Ligon plantations or did one of them father a relative? Hard to know. My people are listed as mulatto in the 1870, 1880 census. You never know. I do believe that I am a descended from the William B.B. Ligon family. In what capacity, I do not know. And uglier thing I heard was that this area in Virginia was breeding slaves. I haven't heard much on this, but I would like to investigate this claim. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In 1806 when the British outlaw immigrating slaves and the US found them selves not being able to import them, the slave owners began sending only males 12 and over to NC and further south like Charleston and even New Orleans. Breeding age women were kept in VA. Many slave owners had moved to NC where taxes were lower on slaves and property. DNA can be done to match any Ligons with others of the same gene pool even blacks. It's not expensive but must be a direct line male. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This is much more helpful to establish your Ligon line and who the fathers were. They have charts of all who do the testing and the genealogies connected to each line. I have found that my family was part of the wagon train that was organized by the William BB and Smith Ligon. They moved to Fayette County, TX. This is where my people are from as well. Author: BashamYork Surnames: Meador/Meadows/Basham Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.princeedward/1403/mb.ashx Message Board Post: All, I am working on tracing my Meador line. I descend from Lucy A. Meador who married John Basham. She is my 4th Great-Grandmother. In Victor P. Meador's "Meador Families of Virginia and points west" he lists Lucy as the daughter of Obediah Meador. On Lucy's marriage record, it lists her as "daughter of Prudence, James Meador Surety." I know Prudence Wells and Obadiah Meadows were married in 1786 per marriage record. I believe that James was her brother and perhaps Obediah was no longer living?? I am unclear who Obediah/Obadiah descends from... On "Janet's Geneology" page she lists Obediah as son of Josiah (son of Jonas), but other documentation I can find does not list Josiah as having a son Obediah. In Victor Meador's book, Obediah (6) is listed as Mary Ann's (5) son. Could this be Obediah Meador (6), father of Lucy... as Mary Ann's son, wouldn't he have a different surname? Several questions: 1. Was Obediah Meador/Meadows Lucy's father? 2. Who were Obediah's parents? 3. Was there more than one Obediah? If anyone has any information about the above people, please contact me at [email protected] Thank you in advance for your help! Kelley. The eldest child was Martha C. Kelley, age 17. About 1858, the family moved to Richmond. Martha does not appear with the family in 1860 and is presumed to have been married. No record of a marriage has been found, searching Richmond, Henrico and Appomattox (presumed lost in 1892). Anyone with a record of a wife named Martha C., who might fit? Other reference? While the marriage likely was in Appomattox (bride's residence), the groom could have been from Buckingham (where the family was in 1840) or Prince Edward (family there from late 1700s). 1. [VAPRINCE] Online Prince Edward chancery records - updated
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Karra_Porter Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.princeedward/1399/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Virginia state library has added online chancery records for 1753-~1801, in addition to the ~1852-1915 that are already up, and are continuing to scan the years between. For those who haven't seen them yet, the digitized Chancery Court files are a fantastic resource, original records sometimes providing detailed family information. (One 1852 matter involving the estate of Josiah Chambers, for example, has more than 1,000 images, including a large descendancy chart from his parents.) Caveat: The "index" indicates what surnames are found in each file, but the index for P.E. is sporadic. I would say that, in more than half of the files I've reviewed, surnames have been missed. (For example, in one case, they indexed a ward, but did not index her guardian, Nicholas Davis. In others, names from lists are not indexed.) So it sometimes pays off to review files of related or neighboring families just in case. 1. [VAPRINCE] Looking for some feedback

    3. I've been sending this email to several different mail lists in order to promote my free ancestry website for beginners. This is not spam. It is only about free ancestry research. I am not profiting from this in any way. I just wanted to do something good for people. Over the years I have been on many Rootsweb mail lists. A person who I was exchanging emails with suggested I send it to a few of the lists in different states and see what happens. So that is what I am doing. Most likely you will see this email more then once if you are on many mail lists. I apologize if it annoys you. In my frustration with the so-called free ancestry websites and free sites which are so cluttered you need a GPS to find your way out, I created my own. It's a simple collection of free ancestry resources and how to use them. My wife and friends encouraged me to put this website together. I kept getting questions from people who knew I was doing ancestry research and wanted to try it themselves. They were beginners and wanted to know where to go to get information about their ancestry. So I put this website together: http://sites.google.com/site/FunSimpleFreeAncestry It contains a lot of links to websites that are already in many of the GenWeb County websites. I just put them all together with examples of how to use them. So far I have received a lot of great feedback . If you have a website and you would like to add my website as a link, then please do. Thanks, Dan Smith
