My name is Laurence Ligon. My family is also from Prince Edward county Virginia. I recently went to Richmond and found a book called the Ligons and their descendents. It was written in the 1920's or 30s and lists all the family connections/marriages/deaths etc. That might be a great place for you to find out more information. The book does not have much in the way of black folks. My family is also black, but I found some great information on the family including the fact that my great grandfather - Young Ligon was part of a wagon train that went to Texas in the early 1850s. Thanks again for your replies. I did find that woman you spoke of from NC. Lots of info on the slave diaries and papers. My mother's family is Nix. I am with you on that. I am not trying to lay claim to someone's property. I just want to find my family. I find it very interesting that you and I both see that the South is still fighting the Civil War. lol. I had two very interesting experiences when I went to the courthouses to get death certificates and other information. In Milam Cnty Texas (Cameron), when asking for some death certs for people that have been dead for over 100 years, the clerk there told me flat out - "these are white people". And so what? I showed her where I was related to these white people and I am sure she cursed me behind my back. Extraordinary. The other was when I went to Miss for the same reason. I told the librarian that I was looking for Kellough descendents in the area. She told me there were many. When I asked if it would be okay for me to visit them, it was a very small town, she shook her head and said oh no, no. that wouldn't be a good idea. Wow. Even to this day. This is why our country can't move forward and be truly great. I appreciate all the information you are providing. I will look for these people and information. I am just tired of all this being ignored for so long on rootsweb and other genealogy sites. It was the single worst period of history in our country . Blacks can find their own families now by DNA which I am sure has caused more then one slave holding family to turn over in their grave. Especially southerners who for years on these sites denied that their grand-daddy or gr grandaddy sired any blacks. LOL.I have been doing this over 50 years. My family were founders 1607 and brought the first slaves to America in Jamestown VA from Burmuda. There are some slave journals still extant , altho it is a trick to find them. These were what all large slave owners kept to keep track of births, deaths, and purchases. Some slaves were in the same family their entire lives . There is a lady named White in Granville Co NC that has done a book and a great deal of genealogy on all this. She is black and a professor at a college there. Years ago I had quite a few online dicussions with her. It has been found that some of these journals and other data have been sanitized from some of the larger universities like Chapel Hill and elsewhere. The most greivous of my experiences have been with clerks in all the courthouses of the south. I am white but because of their paranoia they insist in a lot of these counties that you come in person so they can see you are white before they give out info. It goes on to this day in places like KY and Mo but also in Knoxville Co Tn and all of the southern states. Alabama and MS and even TX being among the worst. The town of McGehee, Ark is founded by slaves belonging to white McGehee's from Bolivar Co MS . The whites lived in large plantations but the slaves lived over the river in LA where they raised Cane. One of my! surnames had 1600 slaves and the other 2500 and all in MS but previously in VA and then NC. You would think after 150 years that we would have become more sympathetic to this plight. But alas the south is still fighting the Civil War and have dug their heels in. There is also places like Abe's books in VA who deal in these slave journals . They are worth a great deal and much coveted. You do not have to be able to trace your family back any farther then one male with the Ligon surname to do the DNA and locate your ancestor. I would sugest doing the 120 DNA as that takes you back to the source of most of the plantations and owners. If you would like to write privately I can supply more info on the Ligons. .
