He was born in Henrico Co. VA in 1730 and died at Clinch Mountain VA (now WV) in 1796. He married Mary Anderson (born 1736) in 1750. He was one of the Trustees of Hampden Sydney College at Farmville VA and was quite prominent in the management of all affairs in his country. He raised a company of soldiers in Prince Edward county VA for the 4th regiment of the Continental army in 1776. There were doubtless many others on his roster during his 7 years service in the war as it is known that he had several sons and many nephews in the 4th VA regiment with him. . . . John Morton as a private soldier in the regular Army of the United States under Capt. John Morton of Prince Edward County, Virginia, in the 4th Virginia Reg. in Gen. Charles Scott's brigade. I have some muster records of my Glover Baker under Captain John Morton. Besides the July 1776 roster, for example, in a Muster Roll for Captain John Morton's company in September of 1776, Remarks for Glover Baker says, "week in Pennsylvania." Also I have a muster for April-May of 1777 under Capt.Morton. Later on in Sept, 1777, myGlover Baker was under Capt. Holcombe during the Battle of Brandywine in PA where he was injured and broke two bones when a musket ball went through his left wrist. In a muster record of Dec. 1777, under Capt Holcombe there is a James Morton listed as a Lieutenant-20 Oct 1777 in the same group. Author: Quinn919 Surnames: McKay Foster Dillon Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.princeedward/1406/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm curious if anyone else is interested in the connection between these families. My GGG-G was George B. McKay. His wife was Sarah A. Dillon. Berryman Foster married Frances Dillon. I think Sarah and Frances were sisters, but can't prove it. Evidence so far: The death certificate for Sarah A. Dillon says her parents were H. and Sally Dillon. (Possibly Henry Dillon) A newspaper article published in the Farmville Herald, July 15, 1927, about the last to living members of the Keysville Guard said William D. Foster and William Creath McKay (my GG-G) were cousins. W.D. is the son of Berryman Foster and W.C. is the son of George B. McKay. After Sarah A died in 1874, I find George living with Fosters in 1880 census. George's daughter, Sarah E. McKay, I believe married William Foster. The reason for piecing all this together is my continuing search for George B. McKay's parents. Supposedly he was born in Amelia County. The Fosters seem to have ties to Amelia County as well. I cannot find a death record for George B. even though he died after 1880. You would think that would be recorded some place. Author: bybow1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.princeedward/1405/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Fellow Bowman Researchers, In the Ancestry.com file, Heads of families at the first census of the United States taken in the year 1790. : records of the state enumerations, 1782 to 1785, the 1785 listing for Prince Edward County, VA, shows John S. Bowman, with 7 white souls, 1 dwelling , and no other buildings. The straight-forward interpretation of this information, is that the household consisted of John Sutton Bowman, his wife Sarah, and five children, but I can find only three children who are listed as belonging to John and Sarah; John Sutton Jr., Nathaniel, and Rebecca. I will welcome any information &/or thoughts anyone has about other siblings of John Sutton Jr., Nathaniel, and Rebecca.
