The indians in Virginia had been there for over 12,000 years and were the ancestors of the Algonquian along the coast and the Siouan and Iroquoian in the interior. I find that oral histories have the habit of streching the truth or covering it up. I have found that in my family. I had a peternal aunt who in a black and white photo look like and indiaian with her long pigtail and with her hair pull back tight to her head but we are irish and english. In looking at the 1880 census I see a Clem Biasy, 46 with Susan his wife and children Edmund, 25 listed as black, Pinkey, 16 mulatto, Chesley, 12 mulatto, Mary, 9 mulatto. In 1870 we find a Clem Byassie with Susan. Edmund is there along with Eliza 10, Pinkey 8, Chesley 4. There is also a Evelina Byassie living next door. She is 45 black. They all are living in Hampden Prince Edwards Co VA. There is also a Henry Stokes who is black living in the same neighborhood he is 63. In 1900 Clem is living with his daughter Emily Richardson and her children, Henry, Clem, Sam, George, and Genia. They are in Leigh, Prince Edwards Co VA. Clem is 60 at this time. Clem is still there in 1910 with his daughter Emily and her daughter Eugine (Genia). In the 1850 Slavey Schedule there is a Tho C Byassy who has 1 black female, 20 and a black male 1 years old. I can send you copies of the census if you would want them Leon Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Naturally I would rather not have an ancestor or even a grgrgrgrgr uncle who owned another person, but the name Thomas Chesley is interesting. Chesley is a surname that was also in the area. I believe the first Byasse was a John who came on a ship in 1711 owned by Edward Hill, who owned the Shirley Plantation in Charles City County, VA. The plantation is still in operation and is also a museum and can be toured in person and on line. The cargo and passengers on the ship were headed for New Kent County. John Byasse may have been friend or family or indentured, but was also on board as a headright. The next Byassee to appear, so far, was another John, in Amelia County in 1782-1783. This is probably the John who married Eddie Westbrook. I don't have all of the dots connected in between, but since Chesley is a surname in the area, I wonder if the first Thomas C. Byassee was Thomas Chesley, which might indicate he had an ancestor named Chesley. The Thomas Chesley who was the son of John and Elvira Winfrey Byassee was living with his parents in Kentucky when still young, so he would not be the suspect, but I still wonder if Thomas C. Byassee in Virginia is your man. I will definitely keep your information in mind while searching and let you know if I find anything and hope you will do the same. I did search for Chesley after I read your earlier posts and that was when I saw the surname Chesley in the area. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Marriage index shows Margaret Downs marrying 4 Nov 1803 one John Hamilton. Has anyone researching Prince Edward come across documents which refer to any of these people? Deeds (grantor, grantee, witness, neighbor, previous owner)? Orders? The first reference to Downs in the personal property tax was 1796. Tax lists checked through 1809. Chancery file 1805-027 shows that Margaret Downs bought 75 acres from Edward Radford, who had purchased the same parcel at a Sheriff's sale for taxes. At the time of sale the land was occupied by Robert Downs and John Hambleton [Hamilton]. Adjoining landowners at time would have included John Billups, Charles Selby and Thomas Yuille. 1. [VAPRINCE] Cordilia Seay Mickle
    2. William Due
    3. Cordilia Seay Mickle was a sister to my ancestor Harriet Mickle. (Daughters of James Mickle and Jane Elam.) Cordella S. Adams is mentioned in her father's will, and he left her 5 slaves and to inherit another when her mother married or died. This was in May of 1858. The family of George Washington Adams is in Pr. Edward Co., VA in 1860 and 1870, but by 1900, they appear to be in Wythe Co., VA. I would look there for his grave site first.

    3. Wish I could answer your question but I can't. While I am not a direct descendant the relationship calculator on my FTM says that Cordelia Seay Mickle and I are first cousins 5x removed.
