Most of the records in these older counties have been preserved. Perhaps you could find information at the Library of Va. They house all the older county records and some can be viewed on line if you are not able to search in person.

Also I will to each of my children above named, to be delivered up to them, as they come of age or marry, fifty pounds cash or the value thereof in such stock and household furniture as they may choose and my wife can spare from the estate. Further I lend to my wife France Redd all my estate, both real and personal, during her natural life, subject to the legacies above mentioned; and at the death of my wife, I devise to my son Charles Anderson Redd the land where I now live, containing six hundred acres (be the same more or less), to him and his heirs. And all my personal estate that shall remain, after my four younger children above named shall be advanced as above directed, I bequeath, on the death of my wife, to be equally divided among my children: George Redd, John Redd, Thomas Redd, William Redd, Charles A. Redd, Fanny Cunningham, Polly Redd, Sally Redd, and Patty Redd; also one child's part to my grandaughter Polly Watkins; also an equal child's part among all the children of my daughter Betsy Billups, to them and their heirs forever. My will further is that, provided my grandaughter Polly Watkins should die before she comes of age or marries, that the legacy intended for her shall not take effect but shall remain a part of my estate and be divided as the rest of my personal estate which shall remain after the death of my wife. I appoint George Redd, John Redd, William Redd, and James Cunningham executors of this my will. Signed with my own hand as my last will and testament this 17th day of January, 1799. Thos. Redd The witnesses were Danl. Dodson, Jr., Richard N. Venable, and Charles Morton. Thenext day he added the following codicil to his will: I, Thomas Redd, hereby direct that, provided my daughter Betsy Billups should survive my wife, and that my said daughter Betsy shall have the use for her life of that part of my estate which is, by my will, directed to be divided among her children. Thos. Redd The same witnesses signed this codicil. More than two years were to elapse before another change was to be made in his will. On 17 April 1801 Thomas Redd, too feeble to sign his name, added the following second codicil, the witnesses to which were his children, George Redd, Sally Anderson Redd, Charles Anderson Redd, and Martha Redd: I hereby revoke and annull so much of my foregoing will and testament as gave to my daughter Polly any property or interest in my estate; and all property and interest which was intended for her in the foregoing will I do now give to my son John Redd and his heirs, to be held in trust by him for the use of the children which my daughter Polly now has or may hereafter have; and I further desire and empower my son John to apply the profits of the said property given him in trust to the support of my daughter Polly and her children, in such manner as he may think proper, without any other guide or restraint than his own discretion. At the death of my daughter Polly it is my will that the said property, given in trust, shall be equally divided among all her children or their legal representatives. It is my desire that my son John shall never be compelled to render an account of the profits of the estate so given him in trust or be accountable to anyone for the manner in which ! he applied it. My will further is that, in the case of the death of my son John, he may by will or otherwise direct who shall take the management of the said estate given in trust. his Thomas X Redd (SEAL) mark The will and its two codicils were proved in court on 15 June 1801, as Thomas was deceased by that date. 1. Re: [VAPRINCE] Thomas Rains Family in Va.
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Jack, I have absolutely no connection to this family at all, but since you'll probably keep sending this query a couple of times each month until you get a response from somebody, which hasn't happened so far, I decided to do a little search. Your Thomas Rains does indeed appear to have moved to Ross County, Ohio; the family shows up there in the 1850 census for Springfield Township. If you have the Ancestry census subscription, this link will take you right to that image: <http://www.ancestry.com/search/io/browse.asp?c=11&state=Ohio&county=Ross&township=Springfield&ed=&roll=M432_725&STAbrv=OH&startimg=533&endimg=566&rp=561&hash=248284625&width=2001&height=2925&levels=5&colorspace=Grayscale> In this listing are: Thomas, age 55, born in VA, occupation Carpenter Mary, age 48, born in VA Nancy, age 31, born in VA Hezekiah, age 30, born in VA George, age 27, born in O (probably Ohio) Mamie, age 24, born in O (probably Ohio) According to the census, neither Thomas, Mary nor Nancy were able to read or write. Based on this information, they appear to have left Virginia between 1820 and 1823. I looked in the VA marriage records and don't see a Thomas Rains that married someone named Mary, but I do see a Thomas Raines: Marriage Index: KY, NC, TN, VA, WV, 1728-1850 Raines, Thomas Spouse : Brown, Mary Marriage date : Feb 13, 1817 This marriage took place in Frederick County, VA. I do see an 1820 census entry for a Thomas Rains in Frederick County, VA, but I don't see any census listings at all for a Thomas Rains in Prince Edward County, VA. In fact, the only census listings for any RAINS at all for Prince Edward County are for Anthony RAINS in 1830 and John RAINS in 1840. Do you know for a fact that there is even a connection to Prince Edward County at all for your Rains family? If not, then this may not be an appropriate list for this query. -- Mary Taffet List Admin for VAPRINCE mdtaffet@syr.edu Jack Shoemaker wrote: > > I am looking for Thomas Rains born in Va. in 1788 may > moved to Ross Co. 2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Hi all, I've had a question from somebody who was asking about a confederate cemetery in Farmville; he didn't know the name of it. I did a search, and found the following page: http://usa-civil-war.com/Civil_War/other_sites_2.html This page mentions a Farmville Confederate Cemetery, and also indicates that there are about 600 people buried there, but no gravemarkes. Questions: 1) Is it true that there are no gravemarkers at all? If so, that's a shame. 2) Does anybody know of a list of burials that might be maintained somewhere for this cemetery? -- Mary Taffet List Admin for VAPRINCE mdtaffet@syr.edu

    1. [VAPRINCE] Frederick Temple c. 1735
    2. Robert Temples
    3. Dear fellow researchers: Some recent clues site a possible connection of Frederick Temple c. 1735 coming from Crawford County, PA. Up till now we had connected him possible to the "Prince George County, VA" Temple's descendant from William Temple. We so, far have not been able to establish a family connection in part to the lost of many records, but also the fact that he and a Laban Temples are most noted as killed at "Buford's Defeat" near Waxhaw, SC in May 29, 1780. Frederick Temple(s) is in Anson County, NC by 1748 as part of jury duty through 1774 and various land transactions through 1779. His son, Frederick shows up in more land sales between 1789-1820. We suspect a close family connection between these two, but no proof has been offered up at this time. Most of the information on Frederick Temples listed on Parker temple's site is mine, after five years of researching him. To date, we have not establish his birth date, parentage, or where he came from prior to 1748 in Anson County. ANY clues or information regarding these two would be more than appreciated. Another possible connection would be to the Levi Temple line. Frederick's descendants spread through out the south most commonly spelled with a (s) added. With "Temple" as the origin name, we have multiple marriages between all of these families. Joyce Temple Barnett, author of several books on her Temple lines and I have joined forces and have worked on the "Southern Lines" while Parker Temple has focused on the NE lines, all the while recording our finding on his site. As we say in research, these are our "brick walls". We have been blessed over the years by hundreds of researches and newly found cousins sharing their work on the "Temples". We have developed a large data base on these and collateral lines which we have shared with many interested parties. Much of what is noted on these lines came from either Joyce or myself. I qualify this only because many have referenced us to our own postings. So, if you think you know of information related to Frederick or Laban Temple(s), we want to hear from you. Thank you for taking time to read this. Robert Temples
