I would like to hear from anyone with knowledge of the BACON family in this county from ca. 1775 through 1810, especially those migrating from Virginia through South Carolina. And any with a connection to the COOK or COOKE family. Regards, Gary garluke@juno.com Gary W. Cooper 653 Lover's Lane Road Dawson, Georgia 39842
Aumon Bass was a well-known teacher of the Deaf at the Virginia School for the Deaf & Blind in Staunton VA. He was in his '70s in the late '50-'60's. My father was a student of his and we (my parents & I) visited him and his wife many times when we went down to Farmville, VA (his ancestral home). I think both the Gallaudet University Archives in Washington DC and the VA School might have more information on him. I would like to see a pix of him and I am sure the other Basses were related to him. I also think both schools would like to have copies of this picture for their archives. I can forward more info on how to contact them if you wish. Nancy Abbott in MD
Greetings, Prince Edward Researchers. I wonder if any of you have ever in your research come across information on a BASS SCHOOL in Prince Edward County. I discovered a picture of this school with a group of children (NAMES GIVEN!) some time ago in the LVA. I found it listed on the internet, and I ordered a copy of it. It is a WONDERFUL picture! These are the children/teachers listed: Aumon Bass, Hugh Gilliam, Tommie Bruce, Watson Bass, Myrtle French, Annie Bruce, Frank Gilliam, Georgie Bruce, Ruth Gilliam, Pearl Bruce, Claude French, Blanche Bass, Lester French, Joseph E. Garland, Miss Annie Cox (teacher), Myrtis Bass, Mida Gilliam, Mr. Tam Bruce, Temple Gilliam, William Gilliam, Carroll Bass, Cabell French, Maude Bruce, Basil Bruce, Eugene Crawford, Sammie Bruce, and Annie Gilliam. Hope this helps someone. Don't forget to let me know if you know something about the school. Thanks, Karen M.
Hello subscribers, I am sending this message to all lists that I administer, so I apologize ahead of time for those of you who will unavoidably receive duplicates. I have made two temporary changes in all the lists that I manage, in an effort to avoid some heavy spamming that has been aimed systematically at various Rootsweb lists and boards. None of the lists or boards that I manage have been hit yet with this particular spam, and hopefully with these temporary changes none will be hit in the future either. The temporary changes are as follows: 1) I have temporarily removed the auto subscription ability. This means that anybody who wishes to change how they are subscribed to any of these lists will need to be patient with me since I will need to do whatever changes are needed manually rather than allowing Smartlist to process them automatically. I believe you can still unsubscribe by yourself, but you will need my assistance for any subscribe requests. 2) Due to a quirk in how the list tools work, change number 1 resulted in the gateway address being placed on the reject list for all lists that I manage. For at least one list, it was there already, but for the others, this is a change. This means that any messages posted to the message board will, temporarily, no longer automatically be forwarded to the paired mailing list. While I wasn't planning to do this initially, it's just as well due to this particular spamming campaign which has hit numerous message boards so far. The gatewayed messages from the message boards will still come to me, but they will not be sent to the lists automatically. I will forward those which are appropriate on to the respective list in question, with the following caveat: If this temporary change results in an increase in the number of message board messages whose replies never reach the intended recipient, I may have to cease forwarding the message board posts. Hopefully before too long Rootsweb management and staff will soon be able to deal with the spamming menace upfront so that the lists and boards won't have to. When that happens, things will return to normal. Any questions about these temporary changes should come directly to me rather than the list. Thank you in advance for your cooperation while these temporary changes are in effect. -- Your list admin, Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu

Perhaps your Walter was a sibling? In looking at James' OB, it mentions a Burnell Overton of Farmville which is the middle name of your Walter Burnel.... Accd to the 1880 Census, there is a Christopher Overtson who may be this Kit since Kit is a common nickname for Christopher. But in this census, he is married to a Sallie V and his mother in law is a Martha R Watson....so something doesn't connect here. Would like more info. Grace (Thompson) Overton, James' wife was my g'mother's sister. Here's James' OB: Watson Overton Rites Held Here Sunday Afternoon Funeral services for James Watson Overton, 62, who died Friday, Jan. 20, at the Southside Community Hospital, were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m., from Doyne Funeral Home here, conducted by the Rev. Benjamin R. Bruner, pastor of the Farmville Methodist Church. Interment was in Westview Cemetery, Farmville. The son of Kit Overton and Nannie Watson, prominent for many years in the political and social life of Prince Edward county, Mr. Watson was reared and spent most of his life here. As a young man, he worked for about ten years for the firm of Paulett and Bugg. Later he served as a fireman with the Norfolk & Western railroad company. Following that he began farming, in which he engaged estensively the remainder of his life. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary G. Thompson Overton; two daughters, Mrs. Brettie Frances Jenkins, of Clemmons, N.C., and Miss Grace Ree Overton of Rice; six sons, James Watson Overton, Jr., of Farmville; Otto Smith, Campbell Lafayette, Eugene Edward, William Quinton and Wyatt Lee Overton, all of Rice; five sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Morton Daniels and Mrs. Willie Budd of Farmville; Mrs. Sallie Foster and Mrs. Martha Foster, of Richmond; Mrs. Lena Morrisette, of Rice; Burnell Overton, of Farmville, and Mann Overton of Lynchburg. Active pallbearers were Claude Butcher, J.T. Clark, J.H. Clark, Irvine Watkins, Joseph Frank, Charles Gates, James Gates, Percy Trear and John Lindsey. Services were attended by a great throng of relatives and friends. ============================

Good Morning and Happy Independence Day (almost!)! I am looking for Emmett Lee Betts who died in the 1930's. He had lived for several decades in Lunenburg County, Pleasant Grove District. This is right next to Prince Edward County and Charlotte County. Since he had a lot of relatives in Prince Edward Co., I think he could have attended church there and perhaps been buried there. Does anyone have knowledge of this Betts and perhaps where I could find him buried along with his wife Allie M. (maiden name unknown) Betts? Thanks, Karen in GA

Hi Everyone! - I am new to this list as I just found a possible lead to long standing dead end!! According to the "Virginia Land Records, Early Settlers in Prince Edward Co., VA" - Page 235, Elisha Eastes bought 400 acres of land in Briery, Prince Edward Co. on 12 January 1747. Then on 20 July 1748, he bought another 400 acres in the same area. This ties into my search for information on the following family: Descendants of Elisha Estes/Eastes (has been spelled both ways) 1 Elisha 07 Estes - b: Abt 1728 d: 1819Roane Co., TN .. +Unknown ..... 2 Elizabeth Estes b: in VA 1756 - d: in TN ......... +Thomas Crumbliss ..... 2 Obadiah Estes b: in VA 1758 - d: 1847 in IN ......... +Francis Harvey 1774 - 1854 ..... 2 Wilmoth Estes ......... +William Mullican III 1769 - 1851 ..... 2 Jenny Estes ......... +Unknown Neighbour ..... 2 Susanna Estes ..... 2 Mary Estes ......... +Warrick Bristow 1767 - 1854 ..... 2 Nany (Nancy) Estes ......... +Unknown Webb ..... 2 David Shipton Estes b: in VA 1776 - d: in KY 1851 ......... +Kezziah Unknown 1777 - 1849 ..... 2 Elisha 08 Estes b: in VA 1778 - d: in KY 1850 All 9 of the children were born in VA so they may have been born in the Prince Edward area. I would appreciate it if some one could tell me: 1. Any information on the Eastes/Estes or other families above. 2. What resources are available in this area that I can contact by E Mail or US Mail. 3. Are marriage records available for 1754/55? Your help will be appreciated! My grandfather was Horace Harper Moorefield and he always told us that the Moorefield's were from Halifax. He was raised in the area known as Tuggle and this is where the church is located on 460. I recently went by the home in which they were raised. It is across the road from the church. I would love to know where James Royal who was in the Civil war is buried and also his father and mother John Royal and Winnie. I placed stones at the church in Prince Edward to mark the graves of John James and Nannie Elizabeth Harper his wife and 1 son Linwood. I reside in Appomattox and grew up in Cumberland.
