I am looking for William and Azariah Moore who moved to Pittsylvania Co. about 1815 from Halifax, descendents of James Moore through his son William Moore of Halifax Co. James was born in 1725 or before probably in Prince Edward or Amelia County, Va. By 1770 he had moved to Halifax Va. His wife was Mary Rice. They had at least 3 sons, Rice Moore, Mackness (or Mackerness) Moore, and William Moore. Rice and Mackness went to Grainger Co. Tn. by about 1795. William, however, stayed in Halifax Co. Va. and was a Methodist Minister living in the Mt. Vernon area. He died in Halifax in 1826. His widow, Lucy, died some years later. We have tested this line through a descendent of Rice Moore and the DNA does not match the Moore line we thought, in fact it does not match any known Moore line at all. Very frustrating. Reverend William Moore had at least 2 sons, William Moore and Azariah Moore, both of whom moved to Pittsylvania County before 1815. According to the census records, we know the following about both of these sons: William Moore was born 1790-1800 and he had at least 2 sons and 3 daughters. His wife's name was Sarah (or Sally). By 1850 William had died, but his wife Sarah was shown as age 64 (which could be in error) along with Nancy Jenkins age 36 (born abt 1814), Sarah Jenkins age 11 (b abt 1839) and a son William Moore born abt 1820, age 30. Was Nancy her daughter from this marriage or a previous marriage? In Halifax there is a Nancy Williamson who married Joel Jenkins in 1834 and we don't find Joel in 1850. Anyway, in 1860 we find Sarah B. Moore age 74 with Nancy E. Jenkins age 46. In 1870 we find Sarah B. Moore age 86 living with Nancy Jenkins, 51, seamstress with the Edmond Keen family, age 49 and he is black, his wife Delphi, black, age 45, and George Cunningham age 7 black. Sarah is also listed as black, but Nancy is listed as white. This is rather odd as this Moore family is white as far as I know. In 1880 I can find neither Sarah Moore nor Nancy Jenkins. I also lose the son William Moore by 1860. Does anyone know where this William Moore went, who he married, or if he died? What happened to the daughters? Azariah Moore was born about 1790 (between 1790 and 1800). He married Letitia and they had four daughters and two sons. According to the census, one son apparently died, but James F. Moore who was born in abt. 1822 survived. Azariah died between 1860 and 1870. In 1880 we find Letitia S. Moore age 79 living with her son James F. Moore, age 58. It appears that James never marries, or he marries after his mother's death sometime after 1880. Does anyone know what happened to James F (or S) Moore. Did he leave, marry, or die after his mother's passing? What happened to the daughters? Anyone who has any information about this family, please contact me at <mailto:[email protected]> [email protected] This family represents by largest, longest-standing brick wall. I would appreciate any help. Roberta Estes
