    1. Re: [VAPITTSY] John Quincy Adams (1824-c1902), husband of Edith A. (Dawson) Bass Adams (1815-c1902)
    2. There were several John Quincy Adams in Virginia and elsewhere in the 19th century, and the person making the original query did not state that her ancestor was connected to Pittsylvania Co., Va. Thus, as far as I can tell at this point, the John Q. Adams who lived in Pittsylvania Co. who married Edith may have no connection to her ancestry. However, since the John Q. Adams who married Edith has been mentioned, I'll share some of my information about him that I hope will result in other people sharing their ideas on his ancestry. The 1860 Pittsylvania Co., VA census (Southern District, dwelling #1336) reports: John Q. Adams 35, carpenter, $30 personal estate; Edith 38; Lewis C. 7; Rawleigh W. 5; Virginia H. 1; and Amanda Adams, 36. (Note: Some printed abstracts of the 1860 census leave off Amanda as being in this household in 1850, though her name is listed there on the microfilm version of this census.) So who was Amanda? I believe she might be the Amanda Adams, "age 22," shown by the 1850 Pittsylvania Co., VA census (Southern District, dwelling #1129) as single and living with her presumed parents. They were Harrison Adams (age 48 in 1850) and Wilmoth Terrell (age 48 in 1850). Note: Harrison Adams married 5 Aug 1824 (bond date) to "Milley" Terrell, per most Pittsylvania Co., Va. marriage abstract books, but I suspect that the actual record might say "Willey" Terrell, thus a nickname for Wilmoth. (Note: Harrison's Adams ancestry extends 2 generations earlier in Pittsylvania County: father Nathan Adams d. 1823, grandfather, John Adams, Sr. d. 1815.) If the Amanda Adams, age 36, in the John Q. Adams household was his sister, then perhaps John Q. Adams was another child of Harrison & Wilmoth (Terrell) Adams who had left home prior to 1850? Has anyone else reached this same tentative conclusion? If not, please share your ideas! Further, John Q. Adams' wife, Edith was not born into the Bass family. She was Edith A. Dawson who 1st married 4 Jan 1841 in Pittsylvania Co., Va. (bond date) to Jonathan B. Bass. She apparently was widowed (or divorced) before the 1850 census as she was then living with her widowed mother, Ann (Adams) Dawson on a farm in the Southern District of Pittsylvania Co., Va. (dwelling #1127) enumerated only 2 households away from Harrison Adams & his family noted above. Edith's mother Ann (Adams) Dawson, daughter of John Adams, Jr. (d. 1824), was the widow of Jonathan Dawson whom she married 23 June 1810 (bond date) in Pittsylvania C., Va. (Note: Ann's grandfather was John Adams Sr. (d. 1815), who, as noted above, might also have been the ancestor of John Q. Adams who married Edith (Dawson) Bass. Thus, John Q. Adams and Edith may have been cousins through the Adams family.) Please share your ideas! Thanks! Robert King, Anchorage, AK > > Try to keep quoting to a minimum.
