William and Nancy Lavinder Hodges had three, perhaps four children. Emily Lilly Hodges Greer, Palmyara Hodges Hambrick and Ferdinand Clayburn Hodges, my great great grandfather. There was another child in the house in 1870 by the name of Ulysses. I cannot determine if he was a child or possibly grandchild. My primary source of info was my late grandfather Dennis Hodges. His father was Clarence Leslie Hodges, Ferd's son. Ferdinand, his wife Lucy Gates Hodges and all but one of their children are buried in the family plot in Gogginsville Va. William and Nancy could be there as well, but that cannot be determined. The last info we have on Wm. and Nancy is in 1880 census, they are around the bend from Ferdinand and Lucy, who are on the road just above Ferd's sister Lilly Greer and her husband George. We also have in our possesion my great grandmothers bible detailing the above information on William and Nancy's family. Except for Ulysses, we are still working on him. I think my William may have been married to Anna Howser and been the father of three girls. Anna and two of the girls are believed to have died I think of scarlett fever, about 1850,leaving William and daughter Mary who was born in 1845. I believe that this is the Mary that is found in the household of Wm. and Nancy until about 1870. I also believe she may be the mother of Ulysses. (Always wanted to know where that name came from in a Confederate household.) I will be more than happy to share any info I have in more detail.
