Hello again, Mitchells of Pittsylvania, Let's get down to basics, and by that I mean the head and land taxes. Keep some things in mind: 1. Because someone is missing in one or more years does not mean they are not in the county. They could be hiding, living with someone else, out of the county when the lists were collected, etc. 2. Up to the Revolutionary War, the Tithable Lists were taken by the Collector posting a notice when and where people were to assemble to list taxes. Tithe lists prior to at least 1783 do NOT reflect neighbors; they reflect friends probably standing in line, family members standing in line, people who "broke into" line, and places "saved for" people in line. The smart new Commonwealth/State of Virginia, sometime after 1783, saw that this method--relying on people to list their own taxes--wasn't working well; and so they started to send the Collector around the neighborhood. That's why MISSING people aren't necessarily missing in the early tithe lists and why after 1783 when dates of listing are included, you can surmise neighborhoods. 3. The only tax years which I have complete (full list of names in the county) are 1767, 1770, 1787, and 1797. There could be Mitchells lurking in the all the other years in lists or names not checked.
