I had Thomas as son of this William (according to April Miller) appparently in error as Thomas wasn't mentioned in will nor reason given for deletion. Working with my Payne and Shelton lines; what can be documented- Thomas (Sr.) Payne, parentage unknown, b.1684 Middlesex County, Virginia d.April 19, 1761 Essex County, Virginia. Have copy of this will from Essex Co., Virginia Will Book 11, page 290; children listed- "sons, Thomas, John, and Reubin and to my four daughters Lettice, Frances, Catharine and Mary seven shillings Sterling to be equally devided amongst them in full of my Estate. Item I give and bequeath to my two sons William & Phillimon all the money that I have out at Interest and in the House to them and their heirs forever." My interest in this Payne family is that my Shelton family also in Middlesex County. Am working on the theory that Thomas's dau. Lettice m.Crispin Shelton 1734 Middlesex County Virginia. Dates and location match, no documentation..yet. Notice the witnesses to William Payne will- Armstead Shelton, Beverly Shelton, Stephen Shelton. Armistead and Beverly are sons of Crispin Shelton and Lettice; I believe the Stephen to be Stephen D, son of Armistead. William Payne's son Giles m. Catherine Shelton, dau. of Gabriel Shelton (son of Crispin) and Elizabeth Shepard. It appears these Payne and Shelton families migrated together from Essex, to Middlesex, to Pittsylvania. This reasoning is why I think April Miller listed Thomas Payne m. Frances Shelton as son of William Payne. Miller is very good but does contain errors. Working on Thomas, son of Thomas; all I have for him-Christening: November 19, 1721, Christ Church, Middlesex Co., VA and d. Caswell County, North Carolina. Question to group: Any ideas on parentage of Thomas Payne b.1755 Essex County, Virginia d. November 14, 1819 Pittsylvania Co., VA-will dated who m. Frances Shelton, dau. of John Shelton and Mary Payne?? (again according to Miller). Jan Shelton Nixon...Thankful for all additions and corrections.
