    2. Geoff, ENTRY RECORD BOOK 1737-1770 (Land entries in the present VA counties of Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin, and Patrick), has the following entry: Saml., Ransome, William & Philemon Southerland, John MAY & Wm. Martin enter 400 Ac. each in all 2400 Acres Ld being all the vacant Land between Yarringtons & Coll. Lomax's Surv.d Orders of Council on the Branches of Sandy Rr. & Leatherwood Cr. The above entry is in Pittsylvania Co. near Danville. I have been told (no Proof) that Samuel Southerland was father of Ransome, William & Philemon; and father-in-law of John MAY & Wm. Martin. Do you have anything on this John MAY, and are you able to confirm the relationship? I am researching the SOUTHERLAND, SUTHERLIN, etc. family. Thank you, Elmer Compton Sarasota, FL

    3. Elmer, Apparently, the entry to which you refer was made no later than 1770. Do you have the exact date? The earliest land transaction I have for John May (my ggggrandfather) is 12 Aug 1776 in the Land Entry Book for Pittsylvania Co. when he either bought or sold (unclear which) 400 acres. He was involved in several other transactions involving land along Sandy River (or Creek) in the late 1790's/early 1800's, including one on 14 Dec 1799 when he sold 100 acres to William Sutherland (sic) for 60 pounds.
