    1. [VAPITTSY-L] Roll Call: William May of Pittsylvannia Co., VA father of Francis May (1775-1851) of Orange Co., IN
    2. Geoffrey May
    3. I am always (and perhaps always will be) searching for information on my May family line. William May (d circa 1805), father of Francis, George, Pleasant, Nancy and possibly Elizabeth, was of Pittsylvannia Co., VA. His brother John served as executor of his estate according to Barren Co., KY probate records. This William May (b. circa 1745-d. crica 1805) has been traditionally confused with a William May of Pittsylvannia (?) and /or Amelia Co. VA who married Betty Dyer, was a revolutionary soldier, and was killed at the Battle of Eutaw Springs, SC in 1781. The Barren Co. probate records together with other records re: the William May (d. 1781) prove the existence of two distinct individuals (thanks to one Bill May, a descendant of William's brother John). The William May who was the father of Francis et al has proved to be the greatest geneaological challenge of all for me; this fact of course gnaws at me because it is the line which will always be most important to me as a direct descendant in the male line. Origins, marriage, birth, death, occupation, ethnicity are unknown. I am descended thru Francis who was born in Pittsylvannia Co., VA in 1775, married at Shelby, KY Mary McGrew in 1795 and was found in Orange Co., IN by 1816. He died there in 1851. Francis was a farmer. Any leads much ciated. -Geoff May
