    3. Claiborne Shelton is the son of John Shelton d. 1804 in Pittsylvania Co VA. Claiborne married Saluda Mustain, d/o Thomas & Mary _ Mustain of Pittsylvania Co. The following is from the History of Gallia Oh. by W.Grody ( A collection of family histories from Gallia Co in 1980) >From History of Gallia Co. OHio by W Grody Claiborn Shelton was the son of John Shelton of Pittsylvania Co,VA. May 16 1785 he married Saluda (Luedy Mustain, daughter of Thomas Mustain. Claiborn served inthe Indian Wars under Gen. Wayne and was much impressed with the farming possibilities of the Wabash County. The government, unable to pay its soldiers in cash, offered land instead. So Claiborn in 1811 headed for tha county. They loaded the bedding in a wagon and Saluda drove a cow hitched to the wagon. All but William the youngest who rode with his mother, walked and carried packs. They followed buffalo and Indian trails and had traveled many miles when they came to what was to become Greenfield Township, Gallia Co. Saluda became too ill to go on. Chimney Rock on Symmes Creek funished shelter. The Creek was full of fish and the woods full of game. That Spring Saluda died. She is buried in a private cemetery on the opposite hillside. Claiborn built a cabin and stayed on until the chidren were grown. Jesse married Peggy Blake in 1817. Thomas married Polly Carter in 1825. Claiborn with Hesse and Thomas headed for the Wabash County. Thomas recieved a land patent in Adams Twyp. Madison Co INdiana, but Jesse moved on into Shelby Co, Illinois. Claiborn died in Indiana in 1848. Many of his descendents remain in Galia Co. Oh. W. Grody"se and Thomas headed for the Wabash County. Thomas recievd a land patent in Adams Twyp. Madison Co INdiana, but Jesse moved on into Shelby Co, Illinois. Claiborn died in Indiana in 1848. Many of his descendents remain in Galia Co. Oh. W. Grody" Also: from same source: Henley born 1790 in VA, and John, each built a log house near Center Point Ohio, on Symmes Creek. Henley's log house which is still standing as of this date, Feb 20 1980, is about 1/2 mile from what is not the Luther Shelton farm where John built his log house. This John way my Great Great Grandfather. IN 1812, Claiborn after the death of Saluda, headed west by wagon train, taking with him the remaining 7 children- never to be heard of again. At this time I do not have any history concerning Heneley but I've been told that he married and had children. My great great grandfather, John settled here in 1810 at the age of 18 years, married and had 11 children, 5 sons and 6 daughters. His oldest son was named Claiborn also and he was my grandfather. This Claiborn, born in 1816, was the first Shelton born in Greenfield Township. He was a farmer, school teacher, surveyor and he started the first bible school in said township. I have been told that the first school was called the Shelton School. Claiborn was married twice and eight children were born to him and his first wife who died in 1863. Seven children were born to him by his second marriage. ONe of these 7 children was named Claiborn, the third to be so named. He was born in Greenfield Township in 1869, and was my father. This Claiborn married Lillie McCoy in 1897 in Perry Twp. near Cadmus Ohio where they settled on a farm. H died in1852 at oak Hill oh. and lillie died 5 years later in 1957. Claiborn and Lillie were the parents of the following children all born in Prry Townshop, Gallia Co. Ohio. Glennis 1897, Wilma 1899-1958, Waldo 1900-1978, Leon 1802-, Carlisle 1904-1973, Glendon 1906-, Melvin 1910, Woodrow 1915-1935. the chldren all attended the Gates School in Perry Township and most of the early Sheltons were farmers and teachers. In 1923, I, Glendon left home at the age of 17 and went to Pittsburg Pa to work in the steel mils until I returned to Oak Hill Ohio in 1893. IN 1933 I married Marie Bownan of Oak Hill and we had five daughters whose names are Shirley, Barbsra, Glenna, Meredith, and Josin. After my wife Maried died in1971, I married Murble HYughes also of Oak hill Ohio. Submitted by Glendon O. Shelton 1980, History of Gallia Ohio. I have the following children for Claiborne Shelton and Leudy Mustain: They are from the Pioneer Lewis Families vol 5 researched by John Lewis, and from the Mustain Family History by Delores Mustaine; Joel Henley John Jesse Betsy/Patsy Thomas Rosetta Saluda "Leudy" William Saluda Mustain did have a sister Tabitha, but she married James Bruce in 13 Feb 1782 Halifax Co VA. Jesse Mustain also had a Tabitha, however, that Tabitha Mustain married Meredith Jennings 14 Dec 1807 Pittsylvania Co VA. There is a Priscilla Mustain who married a William Shelton. it's POSSIBLE that the William Shelton who married Priscilla is a brother to Claiborne. I've not been able to identify which William Shelton. Claiborne has a brother named William, named in John Shelton's will of 1804 in Pittsylvania Co, but I cannot separate out a number of William Shelton's at this point. For those who think Mark Shelton was from John Shelton of Mecklenburg Co VA, , here is the sale of John Shelton's land in Mecklenburg, after the death of that John Shelton/Chilton in Mecklenburg Co VA = Deed Book 5, page 484; dated 1 Sept 1779; recorded 13 Sept 1779; Mark Shelton of 96 District of South Carolina to Edward Walton of Mecklenburg County, Virginia, 122 acres on Butchers Creek; witnesses: Richard Snepson Jr., John Snepson, Joseph Butler, Samuel Young, A. Robison. This is after Mark Chilton/Shelton settled in Pittsylvania Co in 1778/9. I'm not sure who that Mark Shelton/Chilton was, but I don't think he's the son of the JOhn in Mecklenburg, nor do I think that the John who died in Mecklenburg is a son of Ralph. I still think that the John of Pittsylvania Co d. 1804 is son of Ralph and Mary Shelton, as stated above, in the Gallia OH History. It's not primary documentation, but there's a lot of family history that points that way. Just food for thought. Karen I don't find a Tabitha Shelton that comes from either
