    2. I would appreciate any answer to this to go to the list. I also have an interest in the 21st VA, though I understood that it was dissolved and became part of another regiment. I would love to read a more detailed history. Have one Zachariah Irby in it who was wounded in the Battle of Cedar Crk, & wounded again at Cedar Mtn. [or vice versa] with the 21st. He was present at the surrender at Appomattox. Happy Familying Laura Irby -------------------------------------------- Hello Everyone, First of all I want to thank the many people that have sent information on the Civil War.Any one that wants to see how the project is comming along, let me know and I will forward a copy of what is typped at this point and time. I have a Request, Does anyone have a copy of the 21st Virginia Infantry Regimental History? I need a list of the companies that made up the regiment. I have search the net and other sources with no luck as of yet. I'm certain they had 10 companies, but don't know the names of them and when they were formed. If anyone has this information could you please forward it this way. Forever greatefull to everyone for their help and understanding on this project. Respectfully yours, Michael D. 3. Laura, The Regimental history says that Zachariah Iry was in Co I 21st inf. Presetn from 11/12/61 to 1/2/64 except asent when wounded 3/4 to 11/12/62 and AWOL 1-2 to 7/8/63. His entry has less info than some, but I don't know why. The Author is Susan Riggs and she doesn't foot note her source as some do. you might get more info from the NARA on Zachariah, which would tell you exactly when and where he was wounded and how. The only other Irby listed in the 21st is a Robert Riby b. 1820? Pittsylvania Co, father Nathaniel Irby Co I wounded 8/9/62 Cedar Mountain Died Sep 1 1862. I''m not sure of the relationship of the two men. The 21st was present at the surrender at Appomattox and I don't see it melded into another unit. "when the 21st was found that Lee was going to surrender, the Colorbearer tore the flag they had carried into small pieces and gae a piece to each man. The flag had been shot through by three cannon balls and by September 1864, had more than 100 musket ball holes. The men stacked arms on Apr 11 and the formal surrender ceremony was on April 12. The 21st Virginia, commanded at Appomattox by Col.William A. Wicher had 55 men, plus their leader paroled. " 21st Virginia Infantry", Virginia Regimental Histories Series, Susan A Riggs. p 50 Also from same page, The 21st had its share of brave men and of cowards. It engaged in many of the most significant battles of the American Civil War. The story of the 21st Virginia Infantry Regiment should perhaps close with a quote from John H. Worsham, the indefatigable chronicler of its activities; "It is needless to make comparisons between different commands of the Army of Northern Virginia. The world never saw such courage, devotion and patriotism as was displayed by the men of that army and every man in it who did his duty was a hero". Just as the flag went in many different directons, so did the men of the 21st after the war. For those with an interest, I'd highly recommend the series, available at most National Battlefields. For FYI the Number of Men who served in the 21st VA Inf Reg. totalled 1363, with Co I comprised of 154. At the end, they had 55 paroled. Scary thought. ----- Original Message ----- From: <LJIrby@aol.com> To: <VAPITTSY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 14, 2000 10:23 PM Subject: Re: [VAPITTSY-L] Civil War Info Search > I would appreciate any answer to this to go to the list.
