Shields was a son of Samuel Ross Carter and Sallie Hunter Lucke, and grandson of James Carter, Sr. and Lucy Washington Lanier. Shields moved to New York City in the mid-1890's, married, and by 1907, had left his family, possibly to head west. Family lore has it that he died in 1914, but I don't know the source of that information or a location. Another Chatham family I'm following is that of William Marshall Tredway II and his wife Rebecca Chesley Martin. Sallie Hunter Lucke and Rebecca Martin Tredway were close friends, and many years later, late in their lives and having met many miles away, Sallie's grandson (my grandfather) married Rebecca's granddaughter.
