He married 29 December 1784 in that part of Guilford Co., N.C. which became Rockingham Co. the next year, to Mary Cook, born 1769. Mary Cook McCubbin applied for a widow's pension on the service of her husband but was refused because she could present no proof of their marriage other than that of their family Bible. Mary McCubbin married on 17 January 1825, John Dicken of Green Co., Ky. and became his widow 13 June 1841. As Mary Dicken of Green Co., Ky., she applied for a pension 10 March 1853 on the Revolutionary War record of John Dicken. Her application gave the war service of both husbands. She stated that James McCubbin served in the war as a private for the term of six months and was honorably discharged. She recalled James McCubbin telling of being in the Battle of Stono and thinks the officers were Wade Hampton, John Hampton and Edward Hampton; Edward Hampton having been the captain of the company in which her husband served. James McCubbin's service may be found in Revolutionary War Pension Claim 1836 and verified in DAR National No. 250045. James McCubbin appears to have been the son of William McCubbin and his wife Elinor Conley of Maryland who moved to Halifax Co., later Pittsylvannia Co., Virginia. James and Mary Cook McCubbin moved to Green County, Kentucky in 1805 or 1806. His will was presented for probate April 19, 1824 in Green County. In his Declaration, he stated that he volunteered for service as a militiaman in Guilford Co., NC at Guilford Courthouse in the spring of 1779 for a term of nine months in the company of Capt. John Davis and Lieut. George Pearce. He was encamped at Pom Pom Roads near Charleston, SC and later fought in the Battle of Stono on Sunday, the 20th of June. He stated that Gen. Lincoln commanded that day, but Gen Butler was commander of the NC troops. In 1780, he was drafted for a period of three months in the company of Capt. George Pearce and in the regiment of Col. Paisley. In the winter of 1780-81, he volunteered for six months in regiment of Col. Culp in company of Capt. Bevell and was stationed in SC about six miles below Cheraw Hill. In August 1781, he was drafted for three months in the company of Capt. William Bethel in the regiment of Col. Smith. Nicholas McCubbin stated that during the Revolutionary War he was living in what is now Rockingham Co., NC. At that time it was Guilford Co., NC about half a mile from Perkins Ferry on the south side of the Dan River. He had lived in Rockingham County ever since except for about three years that he lived in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia about three miles from the NC state line. "John Whitworth maketh oath that he is acquainted with Nicholas McCubbin... that he knows he was in the service during the revolution, that he marched with him from Guilford Courthouse to Sumner's Ferry on Savannah River..." Alexander Lemons and Edward Godsey cosigned an oath as to McCubbin's character, as did Robert Galloway, Clerk of Court. Jesse Rankin, a clergyman, and James Kyle made oath as to character of McCubbin to Dubastis Dempsey, JP. Nicholas McCubbin was entered on the pension rolls of North Carolina for $70 per annum. On Feb. 27, 1854, John McCubbin, age 54, made application for benefits his mother could have received as a pension under a Congress Act passed on July 29, 1848, granting pensions to widows of persons who served during the Revolutionary War. He stated that he was the only child of Nancy McCubbin. John Shreve, aged about 65, and Abner Joyce, age about 57 signed the document attesting to facts given by John McCubbin. (Pension file # 4-4574) The 1790 Census of Rockingham Co., NC shows that Nicholas McCubbin had six male children under the age of 16, three females and four slaves living in his household other than himself. It is therefore possible that Nicholas McCubbin may have had a previous wife and children. [Source: Early Families of the N.C.
