    3. I have a website called The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We monitor eBay for the auction of poorhouse records. I want you to know of this document which should be considered a valuable historical record. It is my hope that your state archives (whom I have e-mailed about this) will recognize the value of this document and purchase it for their holdings. But since there is no guarantee of this, I am in a quandry what to recommend to you listers. Hmmm. If you decide to bid on this for yourself (even with the intention of donating it to the state archives or a local depository) you may wind up bidding against each other or the archives. But it sure is my hope that someone who will purchase it for the historical record...to share with the public...will obtain it. Item #452055033 is currently up for bid at http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=452055033 at a starting bid of $49.99 It is described as follows: 1844 POORHOUSE DOCUMENT PITTSYLVANIA CO VA Three page document, 8 x 13", all manuscript in quite legible ink. This is a list of Allowances made by the OVERSEER OF THE POOR for the year 1844 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. "At a meeting of the OVERSEERS OF THE POOR for Camden Parish held at Pittsylvania Courthouse on Monday the 3rd day of June, 1844. . . " PRESENT: Richard T. Walden, William H. Payne, Thomas W.Wooding, A.H. Moorman, Henry H. Ferguson, Jonathan Carter, Edmond Fitzgerald, Samuel Berger, John R. Millner, Sexton W. Smith William H. Buford, and V.O. Witcher. The old document nest gives gives a complete list of all expenditures including: MEDICAL SERVICES CARE OF INDIGENT & POOR COUNTY RESIDENTS MAKING OF COFFINS & BURYING FOOD AND BLANKETS BOARDING & NURSING CARE AND STAFFING OF THE POOR HOUSE VAGRANT WARRENTS, etc. Finally, it list rotating assignments for those present (two at a time) to visit and direct the management of the steward at the county poorhouse. Quite an interesting and ephemeral old document. Some stains, 4" separation at top of spine, 3" separation along middle fold of back page, o/w good condition. There are scans of the documents at the link above. From my personal research with such documents, this looks very authentic. Go take a look! This may be your last and only chance ... if this goes into private hands. Hoping to Preserve Poorhouse History, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
