Re: Oath of Allegiance In May 1777, the General Assembly of Virginia required that all free male inhabitants of the state (sixteen and older) be required to denounce their loyalty to the King of England, and to swear their allegiance to the newly formed United States of America and to the Commonwealh of Virginia..
