    1. [VAPITTSY] THOMAS FLETCHER Patriot#S8486
    2. bobby christall
    3. I wanted to get this info out to Rootsweb list to prevent it from being lost again. This is a lineage report of THOMAS FLETCHER b.circa 1760 who died in Halifax Virginia December 28, 1838 and related family surnames. Thomas Fletcher lived Pittsylvania County,VA from (at least) 1790-1811 then in Halifax 1811-Dec 1838 per his second wifes pension declaration whereby she stated " he lived 27 years in Halifax, previously in Pittsylvania" Thomas Fletcher married first to Keziah Farris June 18, 1790 at Pittsylvania County,VA... she was the daughter of Joseph Farris (the Rev.Patriot) and his wife Mary. Keziah was sister to John Farris/Tabitha Farris/Meeky Farris who were later mentioned in many court documents of both Pittsylvania and Halifax counties of Virginia. Keziah died in 1815 and her children's names are mentioned in the guardianship case of Thomas Fletcher: (1) JOHN W. FLETCHER who was born c1791 he married Seeny Compton May 04, 1811 d/o Vincent & Frances(Frankey William Compton. Their children were Joseph Fletcher, Mary Fletcher (never married), and William Fletcher (2)MARY FLETCHER born 1791-1797 She married Beverly Walker on March 7, 1822 in Campbell County,VA. Mary was deceased before 1833 when her father wrote his will. Beverly Walker was widowed by the 1830 census and had three females in his home without a spouse. We know the daughters names were Julian, Elvira, and Elizabeth Ann. (3) Nancy Fletcher born abt 1792 married John Butcher in Campbell County,Virginia on December 7, 1824. They lived in Pittsylvania County most of their lives. (4) Tabitha Fletcher was born about 1798. She married John Stone in Campbell County VA on December 7, 1824. They were in Bedford County Virginia in 1850, but most of her family traveled a bit with the crops as farmers, so she may have been in and out of the Pittsylvania area. (5)Michai (Meeky) Fletcher was born about 1804. She married Henry G. Walker on October 23, 1825 at Halifax (6) Elizabeth Fletcher was born about 1803. She married Florence Walker in Halifax County on December 12, 1826. In the 1850 census they are still in the area and she had her unmarried sister Chloe Fletcher in her home. (7. Chloe Fletcher was born about 1805 and died after 1850. She was never married. (8.) James W. Fletcher was born about 1806 in Halifax. He married in July 3,1835 to Susanna Owens. James will show up in the 1850 census with his family but listed as his brother John W. Fletcher, maybe the census taker knew both boys and just wrote down the wrong name for James, but it's definetyly him and his family. James W. Fletcher died at Chatham Pittsylvania County on August 5, 1876 (per some old bible records) His wife and children can be found in the census there in 1880. Son Alex (Alexander Fletcher) never married. Son Harbart Fletcher apparantly died before 1880. (9) Rebeccah Fletcher born about 1814. She married CLAIBORN MITCHELL December 27, 1832 at Halifax Co.,Va. Claiborn Mitchell was born about 1812. This family lived and died in the Chatham area according to their descendants. Their son James B. Mitchell born about 1840 married there and had a son born 1868 named John Dale Mitchell who married Nora Lee Bryant... he died there in 1948. (10) Sussanah Fletcher born around the time of her mothers death in 1815. Susannah Fletcher never married. She was found in the 1850 census at Pittsylvania County, single and working. Almost all of these families were the working poor of Virginia. They were farmers and maybe even crop workers for other farm owners. I descend from Joseph Fletcher born 1814, son of John W. Fletcher and Seeny Compton who married Mary Tolbert/Talbot in Halifax Virginia 1839 and who moved his sister Mary Fletcher and his wife and 4 oldest children from Halifax Virginia to Wilson County,Tennessee following the death of his two aunts Tabitha Farris and Meeky Farris of Pittsylvania County Virginia in the late 1830's. Surely, you have had your questions answered. My great-great-grandfather Redmond Adams, I just found out, owned land land at Shockoe and sold it to his son-in-law (I think)in 1860. His son Redmond W. Adams (my great-grandfather) owned land and lived in Halifax County. I have learned that, in dealing with locations so close to the county line, it is best to check BOTH court houses! Adams" have the some background! The 2nd marrige record (Halifax Co) for Redmond W. indicates his parents were "Redmond Adams" and Mary. Pittsylvania Co records show the marriage of Redmond Adams and Mary Polly Grigsby, daughter of Moses Grigsby. Looking at Ancestry.com's "Member Trees," I see that someone in Moses' family married a "Jane Redmond"!! I can't help wonder if there is a connection, since "Redmond" certainly is a different first name! I would love to have discovered a will for Redmond Adams, listing his children. The deed book did indicate that he had land at Shockoe, Pittsylvania Co. Maybe this will help you a little!!
