Hi Jerry -- The larger stones and the flakes of stone is what is left over from "flint knapping" if I have spelled it right. Members of the tribe with that talent would search for the right large stones of flint. Then they would strike off shards to break away a good piece of flint and then knap it into the shape of the arrowheads desired. There are usually lots of shards and leftover stone plus arrowheads that weren't acceptable in an area where knapping was done. There were parts of the Amherst County Monacan tribe in this area, plus the area along present day US 29 was a Seminole path from northern areas to what is now Florida during their hunting expeditions. There may be other connections of which I am unaware. You could contact the Monacan Indian Museum in Amherst Co for additional info. I do not know an address, but I am sure they are available on Internet through a search engine, as they are one of the tribes attempting to gain federal recognition. That has happened to me on several occasions - even when someone challenges my information or my conclusions, it helps me to BETTER think through the whole process. I have discovered that things ARE slightly easier, once someone has made it to the 1850 Census, especially if they have enough children, which obviously Arthur Adams did! Back in June, when I was at Pittsylvania County Court House, I made a list of all Adams names in Marriage Book 1, and this time began on Book 2. Neither Arthur nor Archer is there. Personal Property taxes in Virginia is another good source for locating "of-age" males or "propertied" females. I have started a list of Adams names from Pittsylvania County Personal Property taxes, beginning in 1782. But, since there are MANY, MANY, I have only gotten through 1786. Any of those COULD BE the father of Arthur, if he was indeed from Shockoe !! There was a "John Adams," but no Isaac, at least, not in those 4 years. Has anyone checked the marriage records of Lee County, Virginia, for Arthur ? So, you were born in Kentucky. Where do you live now? My folks were well-established in Halifax County, Virginia, by mid-nineteenth century. However, my parents decided to move to Maryland for economic reasons (better jobs?). So I was born here, grew up here, married here, etc. Now I have 13 grandchildren (from my 3 children) and, though my "roots" are still deep in Halifax County, my children are rooted here. I'd LOVE to buy some (preferably ancestral) land in Halifax County and move there. All the folks I've met down there are fantastic people !!!! But .... I can't seem to talk anyone else into it !! My brother (my only sibling) bought an 1820 home in Amelia County and has lived there for the last 20 years. Looking forward to hearing from you again. We are most likely (quite) distant cousins! Robinette . His age stated in the 1850 Lawrence County Kentucky Census quoted later in this paper is given as "61 years", while the 1860 Lawrence County Kentucky Census, also quoted later in this paper, give his age as "74 years". The census figures indicate a birth date of between 1786 and 1789. Robinette, Louis Adams and Beth Campbell Stemple list the birthplace of Arthur Adams as Virginia. . Louis Adams states that Arthur Adams was born in Russell County, Virginia. Stemple stated in her genealogy "The Descendants of Arthur Adams" that he was born "between 1786 - 1789 in Shockoe, Halifax (Pittsylvania) County, Virginia". He came to Kentucky about 1815, with his wife (MARGARET?) FRANCES "PEGGY" HORN, born ca 1793 in Virginia. They are believed to have married about 1810, possibly in Lee County, Virginia as that is where their daughter Elizabeth is said to have been born in 1811. Daughter Jane "Jincy" is said to have been born about 1814 in Scott County, Virginia. Son Isaac is said to have been born about 1817 in Kentucky and son John was born in 1819 in Floyd County, Kentucky. ARTHUR ADAMS is listed in Floyd County, Kentucky in 1820. He appears to be listed as "ARCHER ADDAMS" in the 1823 Lawrence County, KY Tax List of those persons in Lawrence who were previously in the mother county of Floyd. (Lawrence County, Kentucky was formed in 1822 from parts of Floyd and Greenup Counties. ARTHUR ADAMS is listed in the 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 censuses in Lawrence County, Kentucky. He believed to have died about 1861. His widow is listed in the 1870 census of Lawrence County, Kentucky and died before 1880. In Floyd County, Kentucky in 1820 are 17 households headed by men named ADAMS. Several of these have been identified as connected to the JOHN HOBBS ADAMS family, which established a community in what is today Letcher County, Kentucky. There are two men who may be related to Arthur, especially in view of the names of Arthur's first two sons: ISAAC ADAMS and JOHN ADAMS. ARTHUR acquired a land grant on Big Blaine Creek in what became Lawrence County in 1817 and most of his descendants stayed in the area. I was born an Adams and in that area. I have also not identified the line of his wife 'PEGGY' or FRANCES HORN. She is believed to be connected to the JESSE HORNE and JANE BELCHER family, as possibly a sister. I have been unsuccessful in determining even that. The children of ARTHUR ADAMS and FRANCES "PEGGY" HORN (HORNE): Children : 1. ELIZABETH "BETSY" ADAMS, b. May 02, 1811 Lee Co., VA; d. As it turns out, I just got back from a trip to Halifax and Pittsylvania County court houses and the Library of Virginia. In searching marriage records, deeds, and personal property taxes, I do not think I saw any mention of an Arthur Adams. HOWEVER, I will keep my eyes open and let you know IF I run into anything. I have learned that there were 5 men by the name of "Redmond Adams" !!!!! Makes things VERY CONFUSING! Probably they are ALL related. And, it wouldn't surprise me at all if your Arthur Adams is part of the same family ... especially considering where he is located. Given the time frame, he could have been a brother of my Redmond Adams ... or an uncle. Genealogy takes some strange turns sometimes and keeps things EXCITING !!! Do you have any other info about Arthur's family -- brothers, sisters, wife, children ??? Anything might be a clue toward making a connection !! From Rt.29 at Gretna VA, about 10 miles (or a little less ) west on Rt.40 the road crosses Pigg River. About 0.4 miles up river from the bridge,(southwest) Harpen creek enters Pigg River. On the south side of Pigg River secondary road 650 comes north, crosses Harpen Creek snd goes back south. At this point 650 gives access to a gaging ststion and a monimal boat launching area. I'm interested in which Pigg River family you are searching. ( Glojet@aol.com ) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
