Hi, I don't know much about Absolom Black. I recently found out he was a moderator of Camp Creek Baptist Church in Baldwin County, GA during the early 1800s. I am not sure if he died in Baldwin County, GA or Tallapoosa County, AL about 1847. I think his wife was Mary Brown possibly from Greene County, GA. That is all I have. I diffidently think he was a son of Thomas and Susannah Black as he is a younger child. There is a possibility the Thomas was married twice and Susannah was married twice. I don't know the spouses of either one yet. I don't know about the name Absolom. I don't know of any other persons named Absolom. Thomas is definitely a family name going for at least 9-11 generations. My brother's middle name is Thomas. Let me know if you are able the get any more information. Thank you. The parents stayed in Scotland, William & family wnnt to Fairfax County, VA Lunenburg County was then formed, then Pittsylvania County VA is where my Robert settled as a young man in his 20s an d married a Johannah McBee. You need to find a library that has a copy of Register of Free Negroes in Pittsylvania Co, VA by Alva H. Griffith, published by Heritage Books, Inc., 2001. On pages 21-24 there are entries for your family. "B. Roberts - Virginia, Pittsylvania County to wit - No. 73 - At the instance of John Ward and Lynch Dillard, executors of the last will and testament of John Ward, Sr. Decd. duly proven and recorded in the Court of the said County BETSY ROBERTS a girl of colour emancipated by the said will was this day numbered and registered (as a free person of color and given a certificate to show such to prevent her being picked up as a runaway) in the Clerk's office of the said Court, pursuant to the provisions of the act of Assembly in that case made and provided - The said BETSY ROBERTS is a child of PLEASANT and HANAH & is of a rather light complexion, said to be seventeen years old, five feet four and a fourth inches high, has a small scar under the left jaw occasioned by a burn, her forefinger on the right hand crooked at the last or nail joint. Given under my hand as Clerk of the said Court this 5th day of January 1827. Will. Tunstall" The same kind of entry complete with descriptions are given for these additional children of PLEASANT and HANNAH ROBERTS: ELVY, 16 year old daughter PAULINA, 14 year old daughter LAURA, 13 year old daughter PENELOPE, 10 year old daughter CHARLES, 8 year old son JOHN, 3 year old son Entry for PLEASANT ROBERTS shows him as 38 years old as of 25 Dec 1826 and also gives physical description. Entry for HANNAH ROBERTS designates her as 33 year old wife of PLEASANT ROBERTS and also gives a physical description. What I would give to have such a record from 1827 for any of my ancestors!!! If you can't find the book in a library, you should contact the Heritage Books, Inc. to buy a copy of such valuable material. The address of the company is 1540E Pointer Ridge Place, Bowie, MD 20718 (1-800-398-7708) htt[://www.heritagebooks.com All above info from book cover 2001. Hope this makes your day! Elizabeth Frances married Joseph Thomas Lindsey, son of James Henry Lindsey and Mary Catherine Walters, abt. 1874. I do not find a marriage record in Pittsylvania Co. The couple had children William Thomas Lindsey (b. June 1875), Sarah B. Lindsey (b. 27 Sept. 1877), and Martha S. (b. Nov. 1884). All children were born in Pittsylvania Co. Sarah married William Thomas Wall and lived in Danville. I find this family up to 1930 on the census, with Elizabeth Frances Lindsey in the household. I am assuming Elizabeth Frances died after 1930, probably in Danville. Does anyone have death or burial information? Any leads on finding an obituary would be helpful. I am trying to discover what became of Joseph Thomas Lindsey after I last find him in Pittsylvania Co. records in 1902. I'm also interested in finding estate records for James Henry Lindsey. The will index for Pittsylvania Co. says that he died testate with a will in WB 4, p. 324, and I find an index citation to an estate account in Pittsylvania Accts. Current 68, pp. 128, 132. The LDS library system does not seem to have filmed these records. Will appreciate any clues or information on these folks, and happy to share information about this family. Please contact me at stoneman64@cox.net. I believe that the pieces of our respective puzzles may fit together after all. Earl Scott and Mary Hodges can be found in the home of my William and Nancy Hodges in 1860 and 1870. Along with them is listed a woman whose name was either Ellen or Elizabeth who may have been william's sister. The age difference is WAY too close for her to be his mother. Ulysses Hodges is listed as grandson to head of house, I believe his mother was Mary. Looking forward to hearing from you. After going back through my paperwork, I find that Peter Johnson Hodges's parents were William and BETSY Hodges not William and Nancy Lavinder Hodges. Thanks for getting me back on the right track. I also found in my Franklin County marriages a Mary Susan Hodges b. 8/3/1873 who married Benjamin Dickerson Hammock on 1/29/1891 and it shows her parents as William H. Hodges and Nancy E. Hodges. Benjamin was shown as being born in Pittsylvania Co. and they had 12 children. ( I have names if you think this is your line.) I believe Mary Hodges, daughter of William Hodges and Ann Howser, was Mary A. Hodges who was born 1/1847 and married John Otey Blankenship in Franklin Co. on 1/25/1871 (Marriage Book 1 Pg. 90) and was a sister to Earl Scott Hodges who married Elizabeth Jennie Taylor on the same date. They were the parents of my great-grandmother, Cora Hodges. I am related to the Hodges families through my great-grandfather, Sparrell Lee Hodges who married Cor! a Mildred Hodges and through my mother who was married to Edgar Montague Hodges, son of Edgie Hodges and Sinnie Campbell. Now you know why I get confused trying to put three different families together. Would love to share any info that I have with you or anyone who can help me with this puzzle. HI: I googled this phrase and haven't quite gotten an explanation. But -- I think if you add commas around the Indian part, and add a couple of words, I suggest you can see that would include a separate group of people to be counted, as in: "all other persons, except Indians, [who were] not taxed". I know someone will jump in with a better explanation -- at least I hope so. Kberry
