I am not sure if this is who I am looking for or not. Recently, I decided to take another look at the info leading up to one of my biggest brick walls and was pointed in the direction of the Overby/Overbey family. I have collected quite a bit of census info in the past few days, but haven't been able to make a definite connection. Below is a synopsis of the info. I don't really know how all of this connects yet (or if it does), but here it is. Thanks for the prompt reply, Cindy -Emma Edward Wells married James Silas Shelton 25 Dec 1901 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. They are my great grandparents. She died shortly after the birth of her 13th child in 1922. My grandmother was her 2nd child. That is all the info I started with. -I found Emma living with her parents and some of her siblings on the 1900 census in the Tunstall Dist. of Pittsylvania Co., VA. Her parents are listed as Edward J. Wells, b. Feb. 1849, and Nancy E. -?-, b. Nov 1852. -After much searching, I was able to locate Edward & Nancy/Nannie on the 1910 census in Danville. She had died by 1920 and I was able to locate Edward on the 1920 and 1930 censuses in Danville. -I had been unable to find them before the 1900 census according to which they had been married for 30 years. I did find the birth of a son, Charles, in Pittsylvania Co. in 1875. -The first clue I found in my "revived" search was the headstone of Nannie Overbey Wells 1856-1913 in St. Johns Methodist Church, north of Danville. Since the family had lived in the Tunstall/Whitmell/Swansonville area, this burial place would seem to fit. Also, there is another woman buried there with a connection to my Shelton family of the area. The birth date for this Nannie does not fit with the birthdate of 1852, but I thought it was worth a look, sooo..... -I have been looking at the Overby/Overbey family. In doing so, I found in Leaksville, Rockingham Co., NC in 1870: Edward J. Wells, 21, b.VA in the household of P. Brodnax. Three houses away is Nannie Overby, 17, in the household of H.W. and Nan Overby. -The family of HW is in Pittsylvania Co. in 1850 and 1860. -The only marriage in Rockingham Co. that fits is: Henry J. Wells and Nancy E. Overby issued 31 May 1870 and married 6 Jun 1870 Yet, I can find no Henry J. Wells in VA or NC on the 1870 census. Further, why would they be listed in separate households (in Sept 1870) and her with her maiden name if they had married in June....Just one of many questions? -In the death records of Pittsylvania Co. is the following: Smith Overby, d.1860, Old Age, 86 yrs., b. Pittsylvania Co., VA, reported by son, H.W. Overby. -To complicate things, if the Nannie in the 1870 census is "my" Nannie, it appears from the different censuses that she went by the name Nancy/Nannie most of the time, but could have also been using Mary at times. I found the whole family listed as Johnson instead of Wells on the 1910 census!!!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. East and Martha E. Pillow dated 1907 in Pittsylvania Co. Would anyone know if this is the same John O. East, son of Thomas and Elizabeth East, born 20 Sep 1829, died 19 Apr 1909 both in Pittsylvania Co., Va.;who married Nancy Ann Owen, born abt. 1824 in Virginia, died 1907 in Pittsylvania Co., Va. in 1853? It is possible that Martha may have been John's second wife. John O. and Nancy East's grandson (son of David Alexander East and Rebecca Farmer), George L. East (born 1878, died after 1930), married Henrietta Pillow, dau of Irwin C. and Mary Pillow, (born abt. 1870 died after 1930). I have found a Martha E. Pillow (age 30) living with Irwin C. and Mary Pillow in the 1900 Census. It stated that she was Irwin's sister. But trying to find Martha in earlier census' has proven difficult. I wonder if anyone has information that will help me to establish if: 1. John O. East who married Martha Pillow is the same individual who married Nancy Owen. 2. If Martha Pillow was the sister of Irwin C. Pillow. Thank you for any assistance! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. All of Thomas and Obedience's children were mentioned in Thomas' Will: Thomas, Ezekiel, Isaac, Salley, William, Joseph, John and Elizabeth. It is generally believed (but not proven with hard evidence) that Obedience (the elder) was the daughter of William East, of Charlotte Co., Virginia. I have seen a reference in the East Marriage Records - Virginia transcribed by Ernest L. East, of a "Biddy" East. This is what the record states: Date: 1790-09-01 Husband: John Harper Wife: Biddy East Daniel Bates (sur.) Hello, I'm new to this list via a suggestion from another Virginia researcher. I'm grasping at straws really. What I have is my Gr-Gr-Grandfather Zachariah Irby Holloway b 1813 in Virginia as my brickwall. What I'm searching for is any connections between the Irby families and Holloway families in an effort to determine his parentage. Zachariah age 41 married Ruth Asbury Bragg age 18 in 1854 in Georgia and her father Henry C. Bragg was also b in VA. This leads me to believe Zachariah may have been married earlier, probably in VA., but NO PROOF - & no children, YET. I just can't nail down Zachariahs parents. Any assistance or tips would be appreciated. Thanks Love, Lou Louis E. Love, O.D. Houston, TX
