    1. [VAPITTSY-L] Shields families in Pittsylvania
    2. Wyn Achenbaum
    3. Cindy, I don't have a direct answer for you, but I, too am interested in knowing more about Pittsylvania Shields, for two reasons. First, my paternal great grandfather is Shields Saunders Carter of Chatham. I can't find any Shields in his ancestry (there are Saunders there), so I assume they were friends or neighbors, or perhaps someone locally famous at the time he was born Second, I show a Mollie Shields (1877-1939), who married Chesley Martin Tredway (1867-?), a son of William Marshall Tredway II and Rebecca Chesley Martin. Chesley's brother Page Tredway, Sr. (1879-1968), is my step-grandmother's father, and I am poring over huge files of his correspondence today. I recall references to a Coz Mollie, but will have to check dates -- I think they are more recent. Wyn Achenbaum, replying to what Tcindy@aol.com wrote at about 08:29 AM 3/18/2000 -0500: Good morning! I am hoping someone can provide me with information on my Shields Family. My gr-gr grandmother was Tabitha Shields (b. 2 Oct 1836 - d. after 1910) and she married my gr-gr grandfather, James Edward Roark in 1857 or 1858. Her father's name was James Shields (b. 1800 - d. 25 Aug 1873) and he was married to Sarah "Sally" Neal (b. abt. 1805 - d. before 1873) on 24 December 1823. In the 1850 Pittsylvania County Census, James Shields family was listed as follows: James Shields - 50 - Farmer Sally - 45 Nancy - 21 Martha - 18 James - 16 - Laborer Tabitha - 13 William - 11 David - 10 Josiah - 7 Sarah - 5 Joshua - 1 The next household had an Abram Shields - 24 - Farmer, who may also have been James' son. His wife's name was Mary - 19, and they had two daughters, Martha - 2, and Sarah - 1. I have a copy of James Shields' death certificate which lists his father as Wi lliam Shields but no mother is listed. I know there was a William Shields who married a Nancy Farmer and they lived in Pittsylvania County. In the 1820 Pittsylvania Census, under Wm Shiels is listed - 2 males under 10; 2 males 10 - 16; 1 male 18 - 26; 1 male 45 - up; 2 females 16 - 26; 1 female 26 - 45. They had a son named, Joshua Shields who married Mariah Hubbard. This Joshua Shields family was listed on the page before my James Shields in the 1850 census. I have been told by other genealogists researching the Shields family that Joshua and James were brothers. Also, I have been told that this Williams Shields was the son of Patrick Shields who was married to Jeane Armstrong. Any information you can provide me on this family would be greatly appreciated! 3. Dear Mary back in 1980s you did so Genealogy work for Burton Knotts of Little Rock, AR, on the Walrond/Waldron family of Pittsylvania, Halifax etc Co. Burton shared this with me. Since I am a Waldron. We never could find a marriage for Benjamin Waldron that was married to Elizabeth?? she died about 1787/88 in Pittsylvania County as Benjamin later married Lucy Ellington 6 August 1788 in Pittsylvania Co. Do you know if there is a ministers report for these county's not recorded in the index books. I found a marriage for William Walrond that died in 1810 Montgomery County, leaving a will. Do you have any suggestions.
