    3. I show Booker Dalton married Nancy Mayhew (dtr of Henry and Sallie and sister to Jane Mayhew who marr. Drury Owen II) on Mar 14 1828. Is this the same Booker Dalton who married Elizabeth Betsy Owen Dec 26 1831? I have some info on the descendants of Catherine Owen and Richard Blanks if you would like to have it. Richard Blanks was brother to my husband's great-grandfather, Anthony E. Blanks. 2. Can anyone add anything to the discussion on Rev. David BARR? My gg-gf was Rev. William David BARR, who came down from Bedford Co., and prior to that was from Hagerstown MD and Tuscarawas Co., OH. He was a Baptist minister, but didn't start life that way. Just wondering if there is some earlier connection between the two BARR lines. Glen Shelton River Ridge LA

    2. Tom Jones
    3. I didn't mention in my last message that Wet Sleeve was indeed Presbyterian and was built around 1784 (referring to Clement's history). The first pastor called was Rev. David Barr and he was granted a license by Pittsylvania Courthouse to perform marriages in 1785. He moved to NC shortly thereafter and the congregation was ministered to occasionally by visiting pastors Revs. James Mitchell and James Turner of Bedford County. Clement indicates that the church disbanded around the time that Samuel Calland, Sr. died. I'm not sure any Session minutes or other documents survive (as they do for Chatham Presbyterian organized 1846). Tom

    3. David, I have an old web page at http://pages.prodigy.com/VSVE92A/calland.html that talks about the Calland family and mentions Wet Sleeve. Samuel Calland, Sr. was instrumental in organizing Wet Sleeve church. There's a bit more in Maude Carter Clement's history of the county. Unfortunately I no longer have any control over the web page -- it was my understanding that Prodigy would delete them all back in October. Tom/Baltimore

    3. Michael, Pittsylvania County VA Marriage Bond book 1 page 3 shows a marriage bond for Joseph Reynolds and Margaret Devin on 21.August.1780. Pittsylvania County VA Chancery Records dated August.1805 shows Margaret Reynolds as an heir (daughter?) of Joseph Reynolds. The will of William Devin, Sr. (Pittsylvania County VA Deed and Will Book 11 page 243-244) lists Joseph Reynolds as being the husband of his daughter Margaret DEVIN Reynolds. The will also shows that Margaret DEVIN Reynolds had died before 25.November.1800. 1. RE: [VAPITTSY-L] Shields families in Pittsylvania
    2. Kevin K. Stephenson
    3. Cindy and Wyn-- I have connections to both Shields and Saunders. I have an Elizabeth Graham Shields married to Henry Burnett Oct. 5, 1780, in Pittsylvania County. Henry's nephew, Henry Burnett, was married to Frances "Fanny" Saunders Nov. 18, 1846 in Shelby County, Kentucky. It is believed that Fanny and Henry knew each other from Pittsylvania County, as the Burnetts, Shields, Grahams, and Saunders are all interconnected and all four families also have lines in Shelby County, Kentucky. Let me know if you want to compare notes on this. Kevin Stephenson Emporia, KS -----Original Message----- From: Wyn Achenbaum [mailto:wyn@ibm.net] Sent: Saturday, March 18, 2000 11:54 AM To: VAPITTSY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [VAPITTSY-L] Shields families in Pittsylvania Cindy, I don't have a direct answer for you, but I, too am interested in knowing more about Pittsylvania Shields, for two reasons. First, my paternal great grandfather is Shields Saunders Carter of Chatham. I can't find any Shields in his ancestry (there are Saunders there), so I assume they were friends or neighbors, or perhaps someone locally famous at the time he was born Second, I show a Mollie Shields (1877-1939), who married Chesley Martin Tredway (1867-?), a son of William Marshall Tredway II and Rebecca Chesley Martin. Chesley's brother Page Tredway, Sr. (1879-1968), is my step-grandmother's father, and I am poring over huge files of his correspondence today. I recall references to a Coz Mollie, but will have to check dates -- I think they are more recent. Wyn Achenbaum, replying to what Tcindy@aol.com wrote at about 08:29 AM 3/18/2000 -0500: Good morning! I am hoping someone can provide me with information on my Shields Family. My gr-gr grandmother was Tabitha Shields (b. 2 Oct 1836 - d. after 1910) and she married my gr-gr grandfather, James Edward Roark in 1857 or 1858. Her father's name was James Shields (b. 1800 - d. 25 Aug 1873) and he was married to Sarah "Sally" Neal (b. abt. 1805 - d. before 1873) on 24 December 1823. In the 1850 Pittsylvania County Census, James Shields family was listed as follows: James Shields - 50 - Farmer Sally - 45 Nancy - 21 Martha - 18 James - 16 - Laborer Tabitha - 13 William - 11 David - 10 Josiah - 7 Sarah - 5 Joshua - 1 The next household had an Abram Shields - 24 - Farmer, who may also have been James' son. His wife's name was Mary - 19, and they had two daughters, Martha - 2, and Sarah - 1. I have a copy of James Shields' death certificate which lists his father as Wi lliam Shields but no mother is listed. I know there was a William Shields who married a Nancy Farmer and they lived in Pittsylvania County. In the 1820 Pittsylvania Census, under Wm Shiels is listed - 2 males under 10; 2 males 10 - 16; 1 male 18 - 26; 1 male 45 - up; 2 females 16 - 26; 1 female 26 - 45. They had a son named, Joshua Shields who married Mariah Hubbard. This Joshua Shields family was listed on the page before my James Shields in the 1850 census. I have been told by other genealogists researching the Shields family that Joshua and James were brothers. Also, I have been told that this Williams Shields was the son of Patrick Shields who was married to Jeane Armstrong. Any information you can provide me on this family would be greatly appreciated!
