Do you know what happened to Mary Ann? Do you have a record of her death? Let me know if you need any information on her. George's wife (Mary Ann Dalton Doss) and children migrated to Clinton County, Ohio, in the early 1860's, but what happened to George?? Did he die in the Cival War?? Bill, Have you told us all you know about this Henry and his son William? How confident are you of the dates below and what is your source for them? I have an extensive list of Pittsylvania Daltons. Those we know were having children c1766 were: Timothy of Bedford (would be last child by several years) Robert m. Mary Key (probably not him because he names youngest children in will and Henry is not among them). David, m. Hannah. (would be last child by few years). John, m. Patience. (would be last child by four years). James, s/o Timothy of Bedford. David, s/o John (would be first child by three years). Please let me know if there is other information and how certain you are of birth year. On Sun, 30 Apr 2000 15:55:39 -0700 Bill Walace <wlwallace@kih.net> wrote: > Posted on: Pittsylvania Co. I noticed in the previous message that Mr. Barger's people went from Pittsylvania Co Va. to Hardin Co. Ky. I am seeking more information about Larkin Madding who also moved to Hardin Co. Ky. and died there around 1820. Was this a common migration route for people in Pittslyvania Co. when they move" out west"?? Does anyone have other family who moved that direction. Sue Potts

Does Anyone know anything about the families of either Jacob Barger mentioned in the tax records of the 1780s and in the census of the 1780s. I am searching for my gggrand-father Philip Barger born somewhere in Virginia 6 Jan. 1777. Both Jacob Bargers had a family and are the right ages to have been the father of Philip. Any help is appreciated! I have been unable to crack the riddle of who his parents were. He married in Hardin County, Ky. May 1, 1806 to Ruth Grass and died in Harrison County, IN. in 1871
Bill & Agnes, Thank you for answering my query pertaining to early Land Entrys in Pittsy Co. I am sorry, but I only have a copy of the front cover of the book and p. 181 which lists the Land Entry I quoted before, which was dated 22 Jan 1755. According to the Pittsy Co. web site, the Entry Record Book is in the Clerk's office in Chatham. I would guess other copies are in libraries throughout VA. Bill, the William Sutherland you referred to is, no doubt, part of the family of Major Wm. T. Sutherlin whose home in Danville was noted as being the Last Seat of the Confederacy. My Sutherlins moved on to NC about 1775, and I have not been able to establish relationship, if any, with the family who remained in Pittsy Co. Elmer
Elmer, Apparently, the entry to which you refer was made no later than 1770. Do you have the exact date? The earliest land transaction I have for John May (my ggggrandfather) is 12 Aug 1776 in the Land Entry Book for Pittsylvania Co. when he either bought or sold (unclear which) 400 acres. He was involved in several other transactions involving land along Sandy River (or Creek) in the late 1790's/early 1800's, including one on 14 Dec 1799 when he sold 100 acres to William Sutherland (sic) for 60 pounds. Geoff, ENTRY RECORD BOOK 1737-1770 (Land entries in the present VA counties of Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin, and Patrick), has the following entry: Saml., Ransome, William & Philemon Southerland, John MAY & Wm. Martin enter 400 Ac. each in all 2400 Acres Ld being all the vacant Land between Yarringtons & Coll. Lomax's Surv.d Orders of Council on the Branches of Sandy Rr. & Leatherwood Cr. The above entry is in Pittsylvania Co. near Danville. I have been told (no Proof) that Samuel Southerland was father of Ransome, William & Philemon; and father-in-law of John MAY & Wm. Martin. Do you have anything on this John MAY, and are you able to confirm the relationship? I am researching the SOUTHERLAND, SUTHERLIN, etc. family. Thank you, Elmer Compton Sarasota, FL
I am always (and perhaps always will be) searching for information on my May family line. William May (d circa 1805), father of Francis, George, Pleasant, Nancy and possibly Elizabeth, was of Pittsylvannia Co., VA. His brother John served as executor of his estate according to Barren Co., KY probate records. This William May (b. circa 1745-d. crica 1805) has been traditionally confused with a William May of Pittsylvannia (?) and /or Amelia Co. VA who married Betty Dyer, was a revolutionary soldier, and was killed at the Battle of Eutaw Springs, SC in 1781. The Barren Co. probate records together with other records re: the William May (d. 1781) prove the existence of two distinct individuals (thanks to one Bill May, a descendant of William's brother John). The William May who was the father of Francis et al has proved to be the greatest geneaological challenge of all for me; this fact of course gnaws at me because it is the line which will always be most important to me as a direct descendant in the male line. Origins, marriage, birth, death, occupation, ethnicity are unknown. I am descended thru Francis who was born in Pittsylvannia Co., VA in 1775, married at Shelby, KY Mary McGrew in 1795 and was found in Orange Co., IN by 1816. He died there in 1851. Francis was a farmer. Any leads much ciated. -Geoff May
Hi, I just found out that Virginia had death records in 1864. Can someone do me a terrific favor? I am trying hard to find where my great great grandfather died and is buried. His name was Jesse Peter Earles or it could be under Earl. I am coming to Virginia soon but fear there is no time now to do this through the mail. Jesse was born in Pitts Co in 1804, joined the Civil War at age 57 and was even lived through Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. In late 1864 his military trail ends. He had had a stroke and was very ill. I suspect he died between 1864-1870 near Sandy River where his parents were still living. Any help is deeply appreciated!! Thank you!!! Rickie L. I am a descendant of Thomas I. Boaz d. abt 1830, Gallatin County, IL and Phebe W. Boaz b. 10 June 1785 Pittsylvania Co., VA. Does anyone have this couple in their line? Willing to share info from Illinois re this couple. Jan McCabe Hall
Good evening! Recently while visiting Pittsylvania County, my cousin and I found the small family cemetery of my great-great grandparents, James Edward ROARK and Tabitha Shields ROARK. Linda, I would very much like to access the Gedcom to which you refer, but cannot reach it because it's always unavailable. Is this a temporary phenomenon? Any suggestions? Archie Holmes, researching ATKINSON, LOVELL, WATSON, TAYLOR, of Pittsylvania Co.

Hi Folks! I want to let you all know that any of you researching the 1850 Pittsylvania County Census records, you can do so online now.
