I would appreciate it if you would post the description. I gather that both your Clarks and mine are from the southern part of the county. It appears that my ancestor had a farm on the road that ran from east to west in Pittsylvania County. I think the road was on the north side of the Dan River and was the road used to travel to Tennessee and Kentucky. His small farm was located near the confluence of Sandy Creek and the Dan River. This is the federal agency which has *our* pension records, bounty land records, military records, passenger lists as well as other records of importance to a genealogist. NARA is proposing a rate increase. Not a small one to cover the cost of living but a VERY LARGE increase! The records most often sought, the pension records of our ancestors, will have a 400% increase in Sept. unless we make our voices heard. Several years ago, when NARA was threatened with a dramatic funding cut, they appealed to genealogist to write and express our opinions and dissatisfaction. We did and basically *saved* them. Now it is our turn to speak out on this issue too. First visit this site, it is the NARA site that tells you about the proposed fee increases. Some of you can hyperlink and others will need to copy and paste the page. Either way, read it carefully. Yes, it is your typical government document full of mumble jumble and you have to wade through all of that. But the new fees are listed. All increases are far more than a modest increase! Now is the time we can act together. We can write an email, send a fax or better yet, a snail mail letter to NARA. In addition, notify you congressman and any other official you know to express your dissatisfaction in this most unfair rate increase. The time is NOW. The cut off date for getting your opinions in is June 26, 2000. Although the increase is not scheduled until Sept., we must act now to get them to rethink this gigantic increase. Thank you for reading this. Please take the time to write a similar message to each of the mailing list you receive, and send to them as well as to each genealogist that you personally correspond with and encourage them to do the same. Together we can be a Million Genealogist On Line Against Fee Increases!! With elections not far away, I do not think congress wants to make a VERY Large group of constituents upset!! So go below and click or copy and see for yourselves what is proposed and then write your letter now, not tomorrow, not next week. NOW. <A HREF="http://www.nara.gov/nara/fees-pro.html">Proposed Rule NARA Fee Schedule-36 CFR Part 1258</A> or http://www.nara.gov/nara/fees-pro.html Thanks. Jan, II find an Edmund who married Millicent Shelton 1 Apr. 1775, she a dau. of Daniel Shelton. Edmund seems to have a bro. John who m. a Blanche Bucknell 11 July 1782. These Taylor brothers were sons of Capt. James Taylor Sr., who made oath that he served in the Byrd Expedition in 1760, oath made in Pittsylvania Co. Ct. Another son was James Jr., who m. Mary Polley Wooding 5 May, 1785. They had a dau. who married my ancestor Lewis Atkinson, and they went to Christian Co., Ky. later. Your message is helpful to me, in that it lets me know the path some of the Taylors of Pittsylvania followed. Thank you, Archie Holmes.
With all this information about the Sheltons. Does anyone have any information on William Shelton who married Mary Ann Campbell in 1806? I do not know who his parents are. Thanks. CJ
Hi Archie, Yes, Sheltons and Taylors are connected. Thanks for your query; you have stirred my interest in the Taylors, which I have not researched very much. BEVERLY SMITH SHELTON,son of ABRAHAM SHELTON and LETTICE SHELTON (dau. of JOHN SHELTON II and ELIZABETH, Abraham married his 2nd cousin) was b.1798 in Pittsylvania, married 1st SIBBY B. TUCKER March 15, 1819,Pittsylvania, had 7 children; 2nd SUSAN POWELL-McKINNEY March 28, 1839 Todd County, KY, had 2 children. BEVERLY SMITH SHELTON was a grandson of GABRIEL SHELTON b.1739 in Middlesex County Virginia or Amelia County, and ELIZABETH SHEPARD. Gabriel and Elizabeth had dau. JANE b.1777 who married JAMES TAYLOR July 25, 1797 in Pittsylvania County. I have no other info on this James Taylor; you think this is the father of MARY TAYLOR? The dates do seem to fit. This branch of Sheltons was in Pittsylvania from Amelia, Middlesex, and Essex-1702,when Gabriel's grandfather RALPH SHELTON was imported 'into the colonies' by THOMAS MERIWETHER. If you learn more of this James Taylor would appreciate you sending my way. Later down my lines my grandmother NELLIE GRACE TAYLOR b.1900 in Todd County married FINIS OLIVER SHELTON b.1894 in Todd. Have traced Nellie Grace Taylor back to JOHN TAYLOR who married SARAH COX, b.Virginia. and there it stops. Am curious if John Taylor and James Taylor are related? These are my GGGgrandparents. There is an apparent error in the transcription if it has his age as 60 and gives his name as Shelton. This listing should be for Coleman W. Scruggs in 1850 census it should read (notes are mine) Coleman W. Jan, I notice that in the 1820 census of Pittsylvania co., pg.823, there is a Beverly s. Shelton right next to my ancestor Lewis Atkinson. Lewis also went to Christian co., in a roundabout way. First ca. 1822 to Marion co., Illinois, then ca. 1835 to Christian co. Lewis married in Pittsylvania co., Mary Taylor, dau. of James. I think the Taylors and Sheltons were related. Where were they prior to Pittsylvania co.? Also, on the same pg. of the 1820 census was another person which has been discussed on PITTS-L, Jacob Barger, Sr. Archie Holmes

Does anyone have any information regarding Washington BYBEE who was born approximately 1839 . He lived in either Pittsylvania or Campbell County . . . supposedly he was married? to Tabitha Dove, daughter of Nancy Bybee and Stephen Dove, and he was our Great Grandfather (father of Joseph Henry Bybee born in 7/28/1881). Washington Biby (Bybee) (age 21) appeared in the 1860 Census in Campbell County, Castle Craig PO. That is the only time we can find his name. At that time was living in the household of Sarah Adams (65) and William Adams (27). We think that is the Washington Biby Bybee we are looking for. Thanks . . . This List seems to have the most informed people around. Can anyone tell me how to interpret land plots, please? For example, I found a family member listed on N30 of Northampton Co. 1600-1800 Middle Map. Apparently N30 had been settled by about a dozen people in the early 1600's. For those of you who would like to follow this, the page can be found at -- http://www.esva/ghotes/nhmaps/midplot.htm The specific question is: How many acres would be included in a piece of land separately designated: e.g. N30 = ??? acres. I wouldn't think that these would be sections of land (640 acres). Let me hear your wisdom, please. Ernie

Below is a piece of the 1850 Pittsylvania Census (Northern District), transcribed by the Pittsylvania RootsWeb List group (Thanks). I have not been able to place Household 569 in the greater Shelton family - who was this Coleman Shelton, born c. 1790? He must be related to Victory or Mary somehow - I think I have a pretty good line on Victory, and don't see any Coleman. But Mary is just noted as 'maiden name Shelton', making me suspect Coleman was her father. Ann (33) could be a (widowed) sister-in-law, and the remaining kids hers? (Or even a sister, also married to a Shelton, the way this family operated.) Does anything in this family group ring any bells with anyone? Thanks. Hi Sue, Yes, I think that was a common migration. My Shelton family moved from Pittsylvania to Logan, Christian, Muhlenberg, and Todd counties in western KY. Jan Shelton Nixon; descendant of Ralph, Crispin,Gabriel, then Wyatt Shelton from Pittsylvania.
