Potters Creek is west of Gretna, runs north-northwest to south-southeast and crosses US 40 today. It is in the general neighborhood of the Frying Pan Creek area. One of the better known residents of that region in the late 18th century was Bryan Ward Nowlin. Here's something not to miss: Jim Klumpp has developed a Web Site which discusses the Dalton Myths in genealogy and in today's family records. The site probes the myths's sources and errors. Each myth is then replaced by what facts can be found in documents so that we can adjust our own records. Most of these myths deal with the Dalton family who lived in Pittsylvania County. To read these informative studies, go to: http://www.wam.umd.edu/~jklumpp/gen/dalton/myth.html

Hi Karen, Thanks for your newsy response. A few questions... > Please be aware that some of the descendants of John Shelton and Elizabeth > don't agree that John is John II. april Mille's book follows some old > research that says that John Shelton was the son of John Shelton died in > 1778 in MEcklenburg, while visiting his sister. IN fact, that sister, > Catherine Shelton Blakey, had died not long after her marriage to Blakey in > Middlesex Co VA. Do you have death date for Catherine Shelton Blakey? > They may have been part of the larger Shelton family, but when Mark moved to > pittsylvania in abt 1780, he's seen as Mark Chilton and goes by that until > quite a bit later. Then later went by Shelton? instead of Chilton? I am aware that there are errors mixing the Chilton and Shelton lines. Also aware that some Chiltons later changed to Shelton. > John Shelton has been misidentified as a son of John and > brother to Mark, even though John Shelton (Chilton) of Mecklenburg Co makes > no mention of a son John. I have a copy of will of John Shelton stating "In the name of God amen I John Shelton, Senr. of the parish of Saint James in the County of Mecklenburg" dated 18th day of November 1777 and "signed sealed published & declared before us" A. Clack R. Munford Elizabeth Munford Tignal Jones, Junr. Thomas x Pdtchett Nathan Tate John x Shelton mark Problem: you can't be a witness to your own will. Have death date for John Shelton II as November 26, 1801, married Mary Payne March 19, 1800 Grainger County, Tennessee. BUT: 3 children listed for the John Shelton II cannot be correct-Lettice Shelton b.1763,William Shelton b.1766, Lucy Shelton b.1768-if John Shelton II birth date is 1765. I believe these 3 are children of John Shelton Senior. > JUST FYI if you are descended from John. No, just want my files accurate. I descend from Crispin Shelton, then Gabriel. > Who Mark is and his relationship to the family remains a mystery. Again referring to will of John Shelton: In the name of God amen I John Shelton, Senr. of the parish of Saint James in the County of Mecklenburg being in perfect health & of sound & disposing mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament first I resign my soul into the hands of almighty God hoping for a joyful Resurrection in the merits of my savior Christ Jesus & my Body I commit to the earth to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner. Item I give and bequeath the land whereon I now live to my son Mark SheIton to him and his heirs forever-paying such just debts as I may owe at the time of my Decease In case my said son should not comply with the above most reasonable condition then I give the said land to my Grandson William SheIton son of Mark to him and his heirs for ever. Item I appoint my son Mark SheIton the sole executor of this my last will and testament and revoking all other Wills by me heretofore made I do declare this to be my last In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 18th day of November 1777 signed sealed published) & declared before us A. Clack R. Munford Elizabeth Munford Tignal Jones, Junr. Thomas x Pdtchett Nathan Tate John x Shelton mark Seems we might (again!) have a mix up on the Shelton and Chilton lines. Any input you have is greatly appreciated! And Thanks again, Jan Shelton Nixon

I just checked a note from you that said that his farm was on Potters Creek. Is that anywhere near Sandy Creek? I know that Peter H. Clark was married to Elizabeth Campbell. There was a marriage between a John Campbell, b abt 1780 and a Patsy Dodson b. abt 1788 in Pittsylvania Co. on Nov 16, 1805. Could this be a brother of Peter Hamilton Clark's wife, Elizabeth? There was a marriage between Samuel LaPrad and Jane Campbell in Franklin Co., VA on Aug 16, 1796. Was Samuel related to Catherine and Jane Campbell related to Elizabeth and John? Jim H & CJ Nichols wrote: > I have a copy of land records - when Peter H Clark sold his land in > 1825-6. It has, of course, the description of the land being sold.
