    3. Pittsylvania Co was formed from Halifax in 1767, after Halifax had been formed in 1752 from Lunenburg. Thus, it would be county lines rather than people moving in this early era, but it would have been a county line move from east to west! PART OF PITTSYL DID NOT BECOME LUNEN., RATHER THE OTHER WAY AROUND AND DONE BEFORE 1767. MaryLeigh Wanda Cole wrote: > I wonder if a time map of the area might help in this case. In my own, I have speculated and speculated about some ancestors who were in Pittsylvania co, Va, at some point and then moved to Lunenburg co., VA, when all along it was the county lines that shifted as new counties were created. I would certainly like to purchase a map of Virginia for all its many transformations. 3. Hi Cousins I need some help. For years I've been trying to find a reason that Mineerva Jane Craddock Williams moved to Hill Grove/Straightstone area of pittsylvania Co in 1880. She was born in Lunenburg and married in Montgomery Co. AFter her husband's death in Botetourt Co she picked up a number of her 11 children and moved to Hill Grove. This made no sense at all, until I found htere is a Samuel Walter Craddock who was born about the time she moved there, to a John T. Craddock of Straightstone. Samuel W. Craddock named his first son, DABNEY CRADDOCK, a name that Minerva used with her own son, although she went a step farther and named hers DABNEY PHILLIPS CRADDOCK. This makes some sene in Minerva's case, as her paternal grandfather was DABNEY PHILLIPS. The father of John T. Craddock of Pittsylvania Co was a Rawley/Raliegh CRADDOCK, m. Frances WEST in PIttsylvania Co in 6 Sep 1831, about the same time that Minevera's father, E.A. Craddock married Jane Phillips in Lunenburg Co VA. I THINK Raliegh and E.A. Craddock are related, but I don't know how. Does anyone have info on ASA Craddock, Raliegh CRADDOCK, John T. Craddock, Sameul Walter Carddock, Edmond Craddock. All married in Pittsylvania Co. ESPECIALLy interested in children of ASA Craddock and children of John and Samuel CRADDOCK.. a different Sameul than Samuel W. Craddock. ANY Pittsylvania Craddock info is greatly appreciated! Karen

    3. Who did you talk to about Virginia? I just got my husband's father's death certificate from when he died in the 50's. You can always say that you are the decedent's daughter. They did not question my husband request. And he did not have to prove his relationship. I have a form, if you are interested. 2. To the VAPITTSY list and especially Margie Brown, CBJones of Melbourne, FL, and Jan Daily, thank you all for your help and advise in searching for my Swann and Lewis roots--and apologies for the long gap in responding to all of you. My husband and I have just recently moved and everything has been in a total mess (still is, but I'm at the point of ignoring it <grin>). I finally struck it "rich" from the Social Security Admin. After several false Wm. & Jack Swanns I got a copy of "my" Jack's Soc.Sec. application, so I finally have his birthdate--3 Oct. 1923--and approximate death date--Oct. 1967--although not where which would have made it easier in tracking down a death certificate. Speaking of a death certificate, in fact, reminds me that Virginia does NOT release death certificates (except to the immediate family and for inheritence purposes) for 50 years--or birth certificates (except to yourself) for 100 years after the event. (That's just FYI for anyone, like myself, trying to do more modern family genealogy.) Actually, the Soc.Sec. appl. has clarified a couple of points: my grandfather's name was James Burgess Swann, grandmother was Sue Lewis (Swann)--guess "Sue" is her name and not a diminutive--and also an address in Danville as of Oct. 1938. So I'm a little further ahead with my search and I'll just keep plugging along until those bricks just fall out of that wall. Actually, armed with the bit of info I have, and everyone's suggestions I feel that a trip to Danville may be called for this summer. Thank you all so much. Cherie Brumfield

    3. Leemont Cemetery in Danville, VA is in North Danville on Claiborne Street. Since there is only a pay phone in the workers shed there, it would not be listed in the yellow pages. It is a city-owned and operated cemetery. The VA/NC Piedmont Genealogy Society has published the burials and tombstones of this cemetery from its beginnings in late 1800s to 1986 . I am currently working on an updated version of a burial data base. You can contact the genealogy society ( see Pittsylvania homepage for address) for info. 3. Posted on: Pittsylvania Co. Va Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Pittsylvania?read=119 Surname: Morriss ------------------------- I am doing some research for my cousin Morey Morris. Looking for the father of Elijah Morris. Elijah was born 1786 in Pittsylvania Co. Va. He married Jincey or Jencey Haymore 02 Nov 1818 in Pittsylvania Co. Their children we believe are John Morris, b. 1820, Samuel Morris, b. 1822, Jesse Morris, b. 1824, Joseph M. Morris, b. 1825, Tabitha Morris, born 1831 and Susan Morris, b. 1833, she died abt 1870 in Wythe Co. VA. All the children were born in Pittsylvania Co. VA. We do not know how accurate this is though. I saw that there was only one Morris in Pittsylvania Co. VA in 1782 and that was Samuel, could that be Elijah's father? Morey has been looking for 50 yrs for this info. So, any and all help will be appreciated. Thanks for your time. Please send response to MAP1202@prodigy.net as this is hubbies mailbox. Mindy Powell

    1. [VAPITTSY-L] John Clark of Lunenburg Co., VA
    2. Jim Clark
    3. I have two questions for you.. The first is: I have in my files a John Clark who married a Phoebe Lawson of Halifax Co., VA.. I have nothing more on this couple. I would certainly like to know their approximate ages. The second question is: I have a John Clark in my files who was deeded land in the will of Thomas Hawkins, for 200 acres on Sandy Creek. John Clark of Lunenburg Co., VA In Will Book 1 of Lunenburg Co., VA there is mention of a John Clark who apparently is closely associated with Thomas Hawkins of Lunenburg Co., Virginia. .The first association was as follows: Page 54. Per Court Order, we have appraised the estate of William Tait, deceased. Total value: £ 35.10. Signed -Sarah Tait. Signed - Thomas Hawkins, John Clark, Fran.Bresse. Recorded Jan 7, 1752. The court must have held both Thomas Hawkins and John Clark in high regard since they were appointed by the court to appraise the estate of William Tait. Thomas Hawkins falls ill and makes his will on November 13, 1758. In doing so he names John Clark as a beneficiary of 200 acres on Sandy Creek. There is a Sandy Creek in Pittsylvania County. Halifax County separated from Lunenburg County in 1752 and Pittsylvania County separated form Halifax Co.June 1, 1767. It appears then that the 200 acre tract of land mentioned in the will, was in Halifax Co. in 1758. If indeed there is only one Sandy Creek. . Page 250. Will. I, Thomas Hawkins of L, being weak in body To my son Mathew - the plantation I now live on, containing all the lands I bought of William Thomason, James Parish, and John Clarke, except my wife to have her thirds of the same, during her life. To my son John - a plantation in North Carolina on Island Creek. To John Clarke - 200 acres on Sandy Creek, when he makes my heir a right to the land I bought of him on the north side of Butchers Creek. The rest of my lands are to be sold, except the child that my wife is with, if a boy, then he should have the land in dispute between Stephen Collins, if I recover it. If not, I leave him 600 acres on Grassey Creek in Carolina. To my wife Mary - 6 Negroes, viz, Great Jemmy, Jack, Phill, Nanny, Bess, and Cate, during her life, and after her death, for my son Mathew to have them. To my son Mathew - Little Jimmy, Lucy, Jude, Little Moll. To my son John - Charles, George, and Little Nanny. To my daughter Sarah - Will, Laurence, and Soockey. To the child my wife is big with now - Tim, Frank, and Kezee. To John Petter - 30 £, to collect in my Sheriff's arrears. Executors - my brother Pink. Hawkins and my wife Mary. Signed Nov 14, 1758 - Thomas Hawkins. Witnesses - Joseph Dobson, Joseph Rudd (X his mark), Mathew Turner, Martha Jarrot, Jacob Coleson (I his mark). At May 1, 1759 Court, the within will of the deceased was exhibited by Mary Hawkins and Pinkethman Hawkins, the executrix and executor, and the same was proved by the oath of 2 of the witnesses, and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of said executrix and executor, certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate of the will, whereupon they, together with Joseph Williams, Joseph Freeman, William Caldwell, Samuel Young, and James Easter, their securities, entered into [bond]. >From the above will, it appears that: !. Thomas Hawkins bought his "plantation" from John Clark, William Thomason and James Parish. 2. John Clark recently sold some land to Thomas Hawkins that was located on the north side of Butchers Creek. 3. In Thomas Hawkin's will he deeds 200 acres of land on Sandy Creek to John Clark. Does anyone know this John Clark and who he related to? Jim
