He inherited "Clement Hill" (or purchased it from the heirs). Charles Johnson Clement, s/o Charles Clement and Nancy Hanby, was b. 22 Apr 1821 VA, d. 12 Feb 1842 Pittsylvania Co., VA, m. 15 Apr 1839 Pittsylvania Co., VA Lucy Ann Hunt, b. 15 Sep 1819 VA, d. 1 Jun 1860 Pittsylvania Co., VA. John Lynn Hurt, b. ca. 1836, d.12 Sep 1881. Maj. John lynn Hurt willed "Clement Hill" to his nephew also named John Lynn Hurt. The nephew John Lynn Hurt willed "Clement Hill" to the Town of Hurt. The town sold it to a private individual or corporation, who, I believe, still owns it. Thats's my take on it. Richard K.

Hi Cousin Lisa, I'm a descendant of Capt. Benjamin and Susannah thru son Adam Clement who married Agnes Johnson. "Clement Hill" still exists and you can visit it. It's a rental property, though, and not kept up well. The knowledge of the exact location of Benjamin and Susannah's final resting place has probably been lost with the passing of Maude Carter Clement years ago. There's a chance that it was also swept away by the construction of Staunton Plaza along US 29 Business. Ownership of "Clement Hill" passed (if I understand it correctly) to Charles Clement, son of Adam. From there it passed to John L. Hurt, husband of Nannie Kate Clement, granddaughter of Charles (Nannie Kate is the sister of my 2nd great grandmother, Lucy Charles Clement). I may be missing a step or two in the line of ownership. After that it went to John Hurt, Jr., nephew of John L. Hurt. He then deeded the home to the town of Hurt -- the town of Hurt no longer owns it, though. I have a link on my webpage at http://www.toad.net/~tomjones/ that may give a bit more on the history than I'm trying to remember here. Also, there is a mailing list dedicated to the Benjamin Clement / Susannah Hill family -- the command address is CLEMENT-BENJAMIN-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com .
