The initials are probably the persons name. I think it was common for people to be given initials for names in years past. My grandmother had 9 kids and I think she got tired of thinking up names. I have one uncle living today with the name J.O. nothing else. Her other sons received a first name but the middle name is an initial- Carl C, Claude R, William H. Mona
I keep forgetting the signatures, sorry. Anyway astjohn1, not only will DAR accept them, unfortunately it turned up many a man that never married and had issue in our Patriot's Index... and proved the descent from many others wrong! sorry no Dove...... warm regards, Margie
Only men who served in the State line or Navy or Continental Line or Navy, and had 3 years uninterrupted service qualified for Bounty Lands. Militia did not . I didn't know this until I started researching these papers. Many papers that are listed at the VA State level, that now say the papers can not be found, guess where they are? In the Scrip Act papers. 99% are Virginians, altho a few were from other colonies, but all fought in VA units. Margie
Hi Bonni, This is the family of James S. Jones b. 11-Feb-1795 who married 1st Jane G. Thompson and 2nd Mary F. Reamy b. 1-Apr-1815 The transcription of the 1850 census I have by Mike K. Williams reads differently. It lists "James L." (16) and "John T." (14) as children. James and Jane's children were: Labinda K. Jones 11-Jul-1828 Martha E. Jones 28-Feb-1830 George Washington Jones 1-Jun-1832 James S. T. Jones 3-Sep-1835 John Thompson Jones 24-Jul-1836 Mary Jane Jones 8-Dec-1838 James and Mary had no children. This family lived along Rte. 640 near Chestnut Level. James S. Jones is a son of Thomas Brooks Jones and Rebecca; Thomas Brooks Jones is a son of Thomas Jones, Sr. and Mary Brooks. They're my distant cousins -- curious to know your connection, of course! Dear Kate, Thank you for asking about the 1852 Scrip Act. These papers cover the last Bounty distribution for American Revolutionary War service. When Va. ceded her western lands to the new United States, she did so with a promise that all of the bounty lands to VA veterans would be honored. In 1852 there were still 800 claims, the Veteran was long dead, and most of his children, many of these show descent into the 4th and 5th generations. I spent 3 years reading these 1600 files at the National Archives in Suitland, MD. They were in the Land records, and apparently had not been opened since the 1870 time period. Most major libraries have a copy "Genealogical Abstracts, Rev. War Veterans, 1852 Scrip Act" by Margie G. Brown. It is difficult to convince many people than in spite of the fact of what is in a lot of family genealogies, the truth lies in these papers. The books have been reprinted and can be gotten through www. willowbendbooks. com. I will be happy to tell members of the Pittsy page if their ancestor is listed., but this is only good for list members....regards, Margie Brown

Posted on: Pittsylvania Co. Va Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Pittsylvania?read=184 Surname: Thacker ------------------------- I was interested to read your message of 2 June 2000 in which you list a Reuben Thacker as the son of Nathaniel Thacker of Goochland Co., VA. I am a descendant of this Reuben Thacker by his marriage to Nancy Allen. For some time I have speculated that Reuben could be the son of Nathaniel, but have not been able to find documentation to provie it. What evidence do you have to show Reuben as the son of Nathaniel? There was also an older Reuben Thacker in Goochland Co. He died there in 1814 and left a will naming his wife, Jenny and a brother David. Could this Reuben have been a brother of Nathaniel? My Reuben married Nancy Allen in 1797 in Pittsylvania Co. Nancy's mother, widow of Alexander Magruder Allen (Luallen) married a Nathaniel Thacker in Pittsylvania Co. in 1798. Do you have any idea where this Nathaniel came from?
Dear Marge: Please tell us more about the 1852 Scrip Act. I have either forgotten about it or never heard of it. Sincerely, Kate

Hi Tom and All, I may or may not (but probably do, but burned counties, etc.) have Weldons. I don't know about your Jonathan, but I do know that at genforum, there are several posts on these folks: Go to: www.genforum.com/weldon Use the search mechanism and look for hanks and/or any of your other names. Actually, Jonathan might be better for starters. Good Luck Janet Hunter -- Pittsylvania (and successor cos, esp. pg. 430 of Meet Your Ancestors by Bowling: "Joseph Fuller, the son of Brittain and Nancy (Jackson) Fuller, was 76 years old in 1860, therefore, born in 1894. This is one reason for being sure he is the true Joseph, son of Brittain Fuller, who had a son born before 1785, according to the tax list that year. In 1860 he was living in Swansonville section of Pittsylvania Co., Va. He was living alone with a claim of 100 dollars worth of personal property. When he was a young man, he was associated with the Pittsylvania Co., Va. militia. On Oct. 22, 1805, Joseph Fuller "Qualified as Lieutenent in the Military in Pittsylvania County, Va." (See Book 11, page 484). His father deeded him 165 acres of land on Turkey Cock Creek on February 1, 1817. (D.B. No 20, p. 367, Pitts. Co., Va.) No sale of this land was found. Likewise, a Joseph Fuller and Polly Hanks were issued a marriage license on Nov. 3, 1828. They were married by Rev. Richard B. Peck on Nov. 7, 1829. Langley B. Chrowder was his surety. Thomas Hanks Sr. gave his consent. (p. 91, Pitts. Co., Mar. Reg). No evidence was found to prove this Joseph was Brittain Fuller's son or that he had any descendants. Marriage was recorded under Minister's Returns, Pitts. Co., Va. If there are descendants, they have these records to use or eliminate." Hope this helps. Hi, William, Thank you. Yes, this is the family I seek. Do you have that of Isaiah Morton and his children. I have a connection between Isaiah and a James Morton in Alabama in 1830. I know that the James Morton was born in VA, but where and who was his father. Was this 1830 Isaiah Morton in Alabama (1830) a son or grandson of the one who was the son of John Morton and his first wife? The Isaiah Morton in Alabama in 1830 lived next to James Morton. This James Morton states he was born in Virginia. I have definite connections to James Morton, b. 1802/03 in Virginia and this James Morton in Alabama, who lives next to Isaiah Morton in Alabama. James Morton left Alabama in about 1831, whereas Isaiah is found in 1831 buying land in that place in Alabama. Anything you can give me such as John Morton's two marriages and children I would welcome. Thanks.
