Thomas & Martha (CITTY) OWEN had, at least 8 children (2 sons & 6 daughters) born between 1823 and 1847 in the Northern District of Pittsylvania County. The 4 known children are Elizabeth OWEN (1833-1922) who married James W. DAVIS on 17 Dec 1849 in Pittsylvania County; Marie (or Martha?) OWEN born ca. 1842 who married _______ MERRICKS; Thomas H. OWEN (1845-1888) who married Rebecca A. JACKSON on 11 Jan 1872 in Pittsylvania County; Fanny H. OWEN (born ca. 1848) who married Robert ADKINS on 1 Mar 1873 in Pittsylvania County. Would like to hear from any descendants of Thomas & Martha. [Note: This Thomas OWEN is different from the Thomas E. OWEN, of about the same age (born ca. 1804 in VA) who, also, lived in Pittsylvania Co. & was married to Oney HAM. I am not tracking that family.]

Larry, the title of the book is "Genealogical Abstracts, Revolutionary War Veterans, Scrip Act 1852" by Margie G. Brown. Thanks for inquiring.....Margie
Dorothy , how sweet of you to take the time to say nice things about the book. Every deponent listed often gave hints to relationships, if you go into the counties listed below the name of the Veteran, you can probably find the depostion in the court books. Thank you, Margie Brown
Thanks. I will get in touch with Willowbend. As I've gotten older, I find it so much more pleasant (less tiring) to work from home than the library---especially when it means studying the material, so I've wound up with a fairly good collection of books on the early counties of Virginia. This sounds like a wonderful addition. Thank you again.....and for your work. Lydia, I do not have copies for sale, my first printing in 1990 was quickly sold , mainly to libraries. Last year, Craig Scott of Willowbend Books republished the information in a softcover, and a much less expensive version,(info is the same and also allowed me to make some typo corrections). His email is <willowbend@mediasoft.net> or his online site is <http://www.willowbend.net> . In fact I gave my personal copy to the Library at TN Tech at Cookeville, TN and have not replaced it. I have to work from my galley proofs, which is a pain. I spent 3 yrs doing this and found only slight collateral connections, but I loved doing it, because there is a tremendous amount of information on so many VA families. I do not think you would be dissappointed if you purchased it......warm regards, Margie Brown
Lydia, the book is "Genealogical Abstracts, Revolutionary War Veterans, Scrip Act 1852 " by Margie Brown. These are almost all Virginia families, but if you do not read the book, you will miss the people giving depositions, often proving their own service, and the changing names of the females as they come down. I also listed the county courts where papers were filed, these papers may have much more info. For example a query on the Worsham Veteran was not found but descent for Branch Worsham and wife Mary of PE county shows descent from Francis Hobgood. Look at the dates when papers were filed, if the Vet died 1776 and papers are filed upto 1877, we should be finding info on great grandchildren........Happy Hunting, Margie
Dear List and Norma, I think I should point out, that the people that have the most success by reading the Scrip Act book, are the ones who realize that this will often find those unamed grandmothers.....for when you come down to the following generations, the name is no longer the name of the Veteran because those daughters and grandaughters have married. Norma, your veterans were not listed but the index page has a dozen Morris references, and a couple of Crenshaw references. I must withdraw my offer of looking up veterans because I believe this book is available at libraries, and really feel each person must look at it to find CLUES. 4 out of 5 hits, are not through the Veterans asked about, but through an unknown connection to another Veteran.....warm regards, Margie Brown
SURNAMES - WEEKS, FARMER, MILLER I am looking for information on my great grandmother's family. Martha "Dollie" Adams WEEKS (my gr grandmother) was born on 20 Aug 1871, married Edward D. FARMER on 6 Jun 1889, and died in 1961. Edward and Martha FARMER lived in Motley, Virginia. Martha "Dollie" Adams WEEKS' parents were Jesse WEEKS (b. abt. 1842) and Nannie E. MILLER (b. abt. 1847). In the 1880 Pittsylvania County Census, their family is listed as follows: WEEKS, Jesse 38 m farmer Nannie E. 33 f Martha A. 8 f Mary W. 7 f Nannie 5 f Hunt 2 m I was told they also had a son named Jack Weeks. Vivian, YES James Conway is in the 1852 Scrip Act papers. He died in service 1776. regards, Margie Brown
Marie Brown, Could you please check in the Scripts Act Book for JAMES CONWAY. Information found in Virginia Revolutionary Pension Applications Vol. 22, abstracted and compiled by John Frederick Dorman. This book is in the Bassett Public Library. CONWAY, James. R 13351, Virginia Half Pay. A Bill presented to Congress following the refection of the claim by Governor Frederick [of Virginia] provided for the payment of seven years' half pay to the heirs of James Conway who was a lieutenant in the Virginia line and died in service. 18 July 1844. Ro. B. Bagby writes from Richmond, Va., to Christopher Conway that a warrant for 3338 acres was issued for James Conway. Christopher Conway's interest amounts to 1252 1/4 acres and Mrs. Lucy Harrison's amounts to the same after deducting one-fourth for Bagby's interest. I hope this is not an inconvenience. Thank you so much Vivian Echols Smith

Dear List, Dorothy's answer shows the real value of these 1852 Scrip Act papers, it is not just the 800 veterans mentioned, but their descendants.....her answer concerned grandchildren of the Veteran. Please check your local libraries and see if you can get access to a copy of the book. If each veteran had 10 grandchildren , we are talking at least 8,000 heirs. I will take the time to try to put on the list, men out of Southside VA, that may have had descendants in Pittsy....regards, Margie Brown
