    1. Fw: [VAPITTSY-L] map, native flower book
    2. Tom Jones
    3. Hi Sherry, There are folded county maps available for free at any VDOT office in Pittsylvania County. There's one on the Southbound side of US 29, maybe 5 miles north of Chatham (that's where I get mine, anyway). These show most, if not all, the old towns and crossroads mentioned in the census. It also has the districts marked off that you'll also see in the census. It may not show every last one in the census, but most of them. Tom

I would love to read a more detailed history. Have one Zachariah Irby in it who was wounded in the Battle of Cedar Crk, & wounded again at Cedar Mtn. [or vice versa] with the 21st. He was present at the surrender at Appomattox. 3. Dwayne, There used to be an excellent Flippin surname website on the Internet I've lost the URL, but I expect you could find it easily enough. I had not known until now that the Flippins were from Pittsylvania Co. Archibald Thompson, his brothers, brother-in-law and others show up in the Pittsylvania Co. tithables in 1767. Many of these folk emigrated to Kentucky in the late 1700s, and settled in Green, Cumberland and Barren; Monroe was formed from the latter two counties in 1820. Flippin is in Monroe, near the Tennessee border, and is quite historic; among other things it was a major Civil War staging area. It is also near Bugtussell, another Monroe County community. I will check the "History of Monroe County, Ky., 1820-1988," compiled by Dayton Birdwell to see if I can find your Patsey and Joseph Hiler. If you find the Flippin web site, please post the URL as I would like to refer to it again now that I have placed the early family in old Halifax/Pittsylvania Co., VA. 1. [VAPITTSY-L] Danville Riot, 1883
    2. A lovely lady in VA named Bev went to the Library and found this article about the Danville Riot of 1883, I am forwarding this from the VASHENAN-L list (Shenandoah County): Here is the full newspaper article mentioned by Rick in a previous post - it comes from the November 8, 1883 edition of the Valley Virginian out of Staunton, Va. Bev The Danville Riot Its Origin and Result (special in the Virginian) Danville, Va Nov5 - 8:20 a.m. About noon Saturday a colored man meeting some white ladies on Main Street, stepped out of the way and in doing so accidentally trod on the foot of a white man. The negro promptly explained the cause of the accident, but the white man was not satisfied and struck the negro who knocked his assaillant out into the street. Three hours later the parties met again near the same place, and the white man, accomplanied by several friends, assaulted the negro and beat him severely, while two white men with drawn pistols kept the crowd, mostly colored people, from interfering. A colored man attempted to take the pistol from one of the white men and in the scuffle the white man fell in to the gutter. He arose and fired without effect. Immediately several other pistols were drawn by white men gathered at the scene and the colored people began to disperse rapidly. When three shots were heard a crowd of white men and youths assembled ra[idly from adjacent points on the street and opened an indisrimate (sic) fire upon the colored people who were running in every direction. One colored man was met a hundred yards from the fight and deliberately shot dead by a white man approaching the excited crowd. The shooting was soon over. The number of shots is estimated at from fifty to two hundred, and it does not appear that any negroes fired at their white assailants. The result of the shooting, so far as known, is six negroes killed and ten or more wounded. One white man at a distance was wounded by a stray shot, one white man engaged in firing was hit accidentally by his freinds in the rear. It is a wonder that more were not hurt as the crowd of idle people on the street was large as it usually is on Saturday evening. For nearly a half house after the firing began men and youths, armed with shot-guns, rifles and pistols, came rushing as if by concert from all parts of the City to Main street. The excitement was intense and their wrath furious. The first bell was rung, the military was called out. patrols detailed for the streets and the riot act read to the excited crowd. Col. Cabell and other Democrats addressed the excited people and urged peace. Gradually the excietemdnt subsided, the negroes having disappeared from the street. The churches were closed yesterday and crowds of white people were dispersed by the reading of the riot act. The city is patroled by soldiers and armed citizenr and is virtually under Martial law, and will probably remain so until after the election. The Mayour, Judge and Sheriff, in counsel with Col. Cabell and other leading democrate (sic), are making all necessary arrangements to preserve the peace and lives of our citizens. All good men of both colors deplore this unprovoked assault on a defenceless people. The Democrates attribute the riot to Col. Sims speech of Friday night , while Readjusters read in it the logical result of the utterances of such papers as the Times, and the resolutions and speeches of democrates clubs for weeks past.

    3. The Bible record is in the possession of descendants. They kindly shared a copy. Benjamin Parsons was the son of Joseph and Margaret Griffith Parsons of Pittsylvania County Virginia. He and his wife, Sarah Burton Parsons, daughter of Elisha and Eliz. Chamberlain Burton, traveled to Rockcastle/Lincoln County, KY with his brother, Samuel, and the family of Peter James Bailey. Benjamin and Sarah were married December 20, 1790 in Pittsylvania County, VA. Samuel's wife was the daughter of Peter James Bailey. Benjamin remained in KY and his brother Samuel lived for a short time in Logan County, KY and then finally settled in Pike County, MO. 1. [VAPITTSY-L] Appomattox Book
    2. E.S. Rick McDaniel
    3. Several people have sent e-mails requesting more info on the Appomattox book, The book is a complete listing of every soldier in the Army of Northern Virginia who officially surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. I say officially because upon hearing that Lee was to surrender, some soldiers left to head South to join Units in NC, and others simply went home figuring there was no need to stick around if the war was over. The official name of the book is W. G. Nine and Ronald Wilson - THE APPOMATTOX PAROLES - H. E. Howard - 3rd Edition. It can be ordered online from http://www.civilwarmall.com/bookseller/files/civwar5.htm Rick McDaniel chefrick@ioa.com http://www.chefrick.com

    2. Mike, I have a copy of a newspaper article from the Star-Tribune, Chatham, Va. Thursday, Sept 2, 1982. The article is called "Recollections...a True Story About Families of County During Civil War". It is primarily about the Adkins Family, specifically the recollections of Ruth Adkins Aaron. Ruth died a couple of weeks before the article was published at the age of 78. Her father, Ralph G. Adkins was a confederate soldier, so the article contains many stories told to Ruth by her father. If you are interested, I will send you a copy. Don Bennett
