    3. Susannah L. Hurt, b.1800 Virginia, dau. of West Dandridge Hurt and Lucy Shelton, m.William P. Shelton August 16, 1821 Todd County, Kentucky. Have now found this record from Marriage Records of Christian County, KY, 1797-1850:HURT, Susannah L. marriage date 16 Mar 1840 to SHELTON, Gabriel N. The mystery is that William P. Shelton and Gabriel N. Shelton were brothers from Pittsylvania County, VA and both died in Muhlenberg County, KY. The first Susannah L. Hurt is listed with William on record of land transaction in 1834 KY and 1850 Muhlenberg County KY census and died on February 01, 1854. Who is this other Susannah L. Hurt??? From another researcher: Susannah did not live very long and Gabriel N. then married Emily R.Shelton February 24, 1842 Muhlenberg County Kentucky. Jan Shelton Nixon

I know that Debaran was married on 27 Nov. 1837 to Nancy Walker Dodd (Parents: Benjamin Dodd and Susanna Goodman) He was the surety for the marriage of William W. At present I have collected the names of 39 family members in my family tree(either by blood or marriage)includding 2 GGG Grandfathers, that served in the Civil War. The project has grown in leaps and bounds, on my last update it was 19 pages and only about 23 family members. Now it's 39 family members and 59 pages of typped information. I have added two new sections on the project, that is non family members that served in the 18th, 21st, 38th, 42nd, 46th and 57th Va. Infantries. The other section is stories passed down through families of conditions during the war back on the home fronts, stories of soldiers comming home, and the living conditions of the troops them selves. If any one has any information that they would like to add to this it will be greatly appreciated. It will be a HONOR to add as much history of not just my family but all families from back home. They all sacraficed so much for what they belived in. Many thanks to the wonderful people who responds to the request posted on this wonderful website. 3. Hi all. Just thought I would interject here. I don't know much about those you are discussing, but I thought I'd shed some light on "Fannie" and Frances/Francis. Francis - male version of the name. It has the "I". Frances - female version of the name. It has the "E". Fannie is a nickname for Frances, so when you say that he had a daughter named Frances but not Fannie, this is....incorrect, unless they never called her "Fannie". I hope that I've shed some light on the situation, and helped a little. Problem is, which Thomas Payne. That remains a mystery to me. He did have a child named Francis (can't tell whether a son or daughter), but that child was still living, and carrying the Shelton name, in 1801. Likewise, what evidence is there that Thomas Payne had a wife name Francis/Fannie? I agree that Francis, wife of Tunstall, was a) the daughter of a daughter of John Shelton's who was deceased by 1801, b) the daughter of Thomas Payne. I just don't have any confidence that John's daughter/Thomas' wife was named Francis/Fannie. April Miller may not be correct in her analysis of John Shelton, Sr. & Jr. (John clearly didn't go to Mecklenburg to be near his sister Catherine Blakey, because she was already long-dead), but I am not very confident that anyone else is either. Too many contemporary Sheltons named John. a) There was a John Shelton who died in Mecklenburg in 1778. All I know is he had a son named Mark. And, a Mark Shelton does appear in Pittsylvania (branches of Sand & Birches Creeks - where are they?), sometime before 1773. Same Mark? (Seems reasonably likely - Mark is a much less common name than John, but curious that John did not mention his son Mark being of Pittsylvania when he wrote his will in 1777.) Do we have any way to prove this John (d. 1778) is NOT a son of Ralph? Do we have anything on the disposition of his land (inherited by Mark)? Do we have anything on when or how John obtained this Mecklenburg land? b) There must have been a younger John Shelton in Mecklenburg in 1777, since John (d. 1778) is indicated as "Sr." in the will. An unnamed son, or just another, younger, John? If he's not a son, then there were other Mecklenburg Sheltons of John Sr's generation besides John Sr., which would make it quite unlikely that this branch could be the sons of Ralph of Middlesex. But if Jr. is the son of Sr., then April Miller could be mostly right about this line making a brief detour through Mecklenburg. c) A John Shelton received land in the same (Birches Creek) vicinity in Pittsylvania in 1805. Probably Mark's son. d) A (different?) John Shelton bought 250 acres in Pittsylvania on 11/7/1778 Pittsylvania VA (Shelton, Crispen; Shelton, Benjamin; Shelton, William - wit). This one is pretty likely the one who died in 1804 (gf of Francis Payne Shelton). This is also probably the John Shelton who sold Amelia Co. land in 1774. Is there any record of whether this John was literate? (The John who died in Mecklenburg in 1778 signed with a 'mark'). All for now. Thanks to everyone for their comments. 3. A cousin sent me the following URL, which is the diary of Josephus Newton Davis. www.ls.net/~newriver/misc/jndavis.htm The diary contains so many references to so many families, regions, religion and so forth that I cannot cite specifics, and thus will cross post this message hoping some descendants will find a reference to family. I can, however, identify some folk that connect to my family line, which is why my cousin sent me the link: The Jacob Lorton in this piece is the stepfather of Mary Elswick, Archibald Thompson's wife. He married Lydia Unknown Elswick after the death of her first husband, John Elswick, II. Davis says this about their son, Israel, b. 1749 " . . . But Israel Lorton who was the captain of the Company with which my grandfather enlisted on his return from the war pretending to settle the business for my grandmother got hold of the titles he had for a most splendid tract of land on Meadow Creek Montgomery County, Virginia. " Two other references that I can connect to my Thompson line are Moses Scaggs and an Archibald Whitt. Garrett Davis, raised by Moses Scaggs, is said to be his only heir; if this is the Moses Skaggs, brother to Longhunters and other Skaggs siblings, then he was not around when Moses died, or at least he's not mentioned in the Moses Skaggs Estate Suit in Green Co., Ky. But these are only small references in this vast history of a remarkable man.

    3. Saw your note to Jane. Here's will of John Shelton, my GGGGgrandfather, b. 1722 Middlesex Co VA d. 1804 Pittsylvania Co VA. I know that's different than April Miller's book but I have good reason's for believing John is the son of Ralph and Mary Crispin Shelton, and that son didn't die in Mecklenburg Co VA. Francis Payne was the grandaughter of John Shelton, by his daughter, Fannie who had married Thomas Payne. Problem is, which Thomas Payne. That remains a mystery to me. Fannie was dec'd before the writing of the will in 1801 and the granddaughter was old enough to be married to Tunstall Shelton, her cousin.. I believe Fannie and my Jane Shelton Lewis, wife of William Lewis (m. in Amelia)b. 1756 in Amelia Co VA ? d. 17 jul 1821 Pittsylvania Co (obit states she was 65 years old in 1821, are the oldest two of John's children. They may be by a different wife than the Elizabeth, or Elizabeth had a lot of children over a long period of years. I think there were two wives for John Shelton and that's why the kids appear to be treated differently in the will, with the older daughters already taken care of and the younger inheriting what he had for an estate in 1801. In any case, I can prove who the grandfather of Francis who married Tunstall Shelton was...John Shelton. Deeds and Wills Bk 11 p 269-270 26 Nov 1801 Pr 18 Jun 1804 LWT John Shelton in tolerable good health and sound mind and of disposing memory. to my son Abraham Shelton all my tract of land I now live To my daughter Jane Lewis one dollar To my grand daughter FRANCIS SHELTON, wife of Tunstall Shelton fifty cents To my daughter Mary Poore $50.00 I lend to my chlldren hereafter named and thier heirs my negroes to be equally divided: William Shelton, Joel Shelton, Claiborne Shelton, Abraham Shelton, Francis Shelton, Martha Tucker, Charlotte Shelton, Nancy White, Lucy Hunt, Lettice Shelton. Will of Thomas Payne; Will book page 527-528 WD: 14 Nov. 1819 Proved: 20 Dec. 1819 LWT: Thomas Payne being unwell but of sound mind and disposing memory. I lend my beloved wife during her life or widowhood my Negro woman Juney and my other property. At the death of my wife my Negro Juney be sold and the money divided between my daughters Jane B Payne and Milley Payne. The balance of property loaned my wife to be sold and divided between my three daughters: Fanny Shelton (wife of Tunstall Shelton), Jane B. Payne, and Milley Payne. The only thing I have at this time is my Great Grand Father, Williams Griffin CHATTIN Sr. married Eliza Tom Wooding SHELTON, Born: 12-25-1841 in Gretna, Pittsylvania County, Virginia and Died: 1-28-33 in Goodview, Bedford County, Virginia. They married in Pittsylvania County 12-1-1870. That is as much as I have done right now. Also, this summer with working so much overtime, yard work and other honey do's I won't have the time, until fall or winter returns. My grandfather is William Griffin CHATTIN Jr. and his wife is Ossie Vera Morgan. They came to Botourte County from Goodview, Bedford County, Virginia. Wm. G. CHATTIN Sr. father was Jesse Henry, Thomas C., John, Thomas Cornelius, ThomasII and ThomasI. The first Chattin came to America in 1652/53 in Lancaster County, Virginia. It was another Chattin came to America in New Jersey at the close of the 1600. I don't have that connection, but I can connect you or any one that has done most of the research. If you could take a moment to send me an email at Msajk@aol.com just letting me know what you use, what you like about it, and what you hate about it, I would be most appreciative. I have been to the different sites, taken the free demos, read info until I am blue in the face, and I still can't decide. 2. I have knowledge that a relative of mine may have spent time in a local jail in 1905. How does one go about locating this info? It would have been the county jail and even though I am not far from the county, I am not sure who would have these records after all of these years. Any info that you could provide on either of the above issues would be appreciated. Thanks April Msajk@aol.com
